Job Description

As an internationally reputed elite university, DTU is at the forefront of innovation related to “the sustainable transition.” At the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), we are specifically looking for new ways to support the sustainable production of bio-chemicals, and that is why we need you and all your good method development and publication skills. The project aims to channel information from fundamental research to a decision support tool for experimental researchers to tune their process parameters and foresee the corresponding sustainability impacts.

Guide innovation by integrating socio-economic impacts and environmental aspects into the sustainability assessment workflows
Your job is to support the vision of sustainable bio-chemical production. You will do so by designing and developing strategies for innovation to guide the R&D activities of bio-based technologies for the global bio-chemical industry. Specifically, you will be responsible for identifying and evaluating the societal and environmental indicators and their impacts on projects at an early stage of development. The indicators will be quantified and tracked for their impacts as the project matures and transforms into a commercial success. One of the key aspects of this position is to spread knowledge and tools to stakeholders active in the biotech sector in Denmark and beyond. Hence, we seek a proactive candidate with a strong background in statistics and economics.

Your primary tasks will be to: 

  • Design workflows for quantitative societal sustainability assessment of low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) biotechnology-based products.
  • Work on novel workflows, build on existing environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) simulations to integrate the socio-economic impacts.
  • Screen and identify socio-economic indicators, i.e., Social-KPIs, Social-LCA, relevant to microbial foods, natural products, and chemicals production via biotechnology.
  • Analyse diverse data, including survey, experiment, and market data, as well as trends and forecasts.
  • Design workflows in collaboration with academic and industrial stakeholders to identify the key benefits and challenges caused by the introduction of novel bio-based food, chemicals, enzymes, etc.
  • Apply statistical assessment and tests to generate and validate outcomes.
  • Synthesize findings into insights and actionable recommendations.
  • Engage in teaching professionals via engaging presentations and case studies.

Qualifications
We are looking for a profile with the motivation and drive needed to make a difference that matters. As you join a multidisciplinary team, you must bring a flexible and adaptable mindset. Additionally, you must like to create results via collaboration with people from different professional and cultural backgrounds. You must also thrive on making decisions based on limited information to succeed.

Additionally, it would be ideal if the candidate meets the following requirements: 

  • A Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering/Science, Economics, or similar, with a focus on environmental and societal insights. 
  • A candidate who can manoeuvre LCA software such as OpenLCA and SimaPro will be highly desired.
  • Experience in environmental and social sustainability assessment and a will to conduct systems analysis.
  • A sound understanding of financial and market analysis, consumer preferences, and trends.
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies, start-ups, and industrial stakeholders to demonstrate the relevance of consumer behavioural aspects to be considered during product development.
  • A strong background in statistics with a record of implementing methods in real-life projects.
  • Outstanding communication skills and demonstrable experience in project management.
  • The ability to demonstrate and operate in line with the team’s core values. These are excellence, teamwork, integrity, respect, and stewardship.
  • A strong record of accomplishment in interacting with international stakeholders in projects.

Your New Team - Sustainable Innovation Office
At DTU Biosustain, you will work in the Sustainable Innovation Office. Our focus is to guide innovation at an early stage by assessing the benefits (society, economic and environmental) of developed bio-based technologies. We aim to develop computational tools that provides insights to guide the research community in DTU and beyond to assess the sustainability of bio-based products. Our work environment is informal and characterised by knowledge sharing, respect, trust, and room for having an enjoyable time together – naturally balanced with creating tangible results. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The employment will end in December 2025.
