Project and Outreach Manager (Academic Research Officer or Special Consultant), Section for HoloGenomics, GLOBE Institute

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Deadline: 01 Jul 2022

The GLOBE Institute is looking for an energetic and organized project and outreach manager until the end of Feb 2025, as part of the newly funded EU Research and Innovation Actions project FindingPheno awarded to Assoc Prof Shyam Gopalakrishnan and colleagues. FindingPheno will develop and implement new methods for multi-omics data to better understand the pathways leading from genotype to phenotype, with a special focus on the role of the microbiome. The project is built around an international consortium of 8 partners including 5 Universities/Research institutions (University of Copenhagen (Denmark), University of Turku (Finland), Center for Ecological Research (Hungary), EMBL/EBI (Germany/UK) and Champalimaud Foundation (Portugal)) and 3 Private enterprises (Chr. Hansen A/S (Denmark), Qiagen A/S (Denmark) and Njorth Bio Science Ltd. (UK)) that will devise novel computational methods to infer the interactions between the host genomics and the gut microbial communities using multi-omics data, to better understand the role of this interaction on systems ranging from salmon, chicken, honey bees, maize, and tomato. The primary aim of this action is to develop and demonstrate a computational/ statistical platform to analyze multi-omics data to identify the molecular basis of organismal phenotypes.

In order to facilitate the smooth and successful implementation of the project, all research activities will be coordinated by our central team in Copenhagen. In this context, we seek a project manager with two roles. Firstly, they will help coordinate the activities of the overall research teams and their progress, and in particular ensure all work packages proceed as envisaged, deliverables are ready on time, planning and implementation of project meetings, coordination of project reports, periodic reports etc. Secondly the project manager will be tasked with leading the project’s outreach efforts, both through maintaining an active online presence (e.g. via website, twitter etc.), as well as actively visiting potentially relevant third parties, presenting the project at appropriate industrial and academic meetings, etc. Although the position is based in Copenhagen, the position will require travel, to both our partners in Finland, Hungary, Portugal, and the UK, as well as to other countries as required for outreach purposes. Furthermore, given the technical nature of this work, we anticipate that the successfully chosen applicant will have a scientific background in an appropriate area to aid integration of the manager into the project. The project manager will work in conjunction with other project managers at the Institution and will be supported in their role by the EU post award office at the University of Copenhagen.

Main tasks

  • Coordinate the overall progress of the project, including ensuring all deliverables and tasks are completed on time, spending follows the financial plan, and reporting happens on time to both the EU and industrial partners.
  • Work closely with the lead researchers at each institute and industrial partner to enable them to overcome any management related challenges.
  • Coordinate project meetings and related symposia.
  • Coordinate and lead the project’s outreach activities.
  • Lead the preparation of progress and dissemination reports on the project’s technical processes and progress by compiling input from project partners.
  • Outreach and public communication including creating and maintaining a webpage, Twitter, Instagram profiles etc.
  • Explore additional synergistic actions with which to enable future expansion of the project’s research, including coordinating fundraising for future actions.

Mandatory qualifications

We expect that you are:

  • Experienced in project management and outreach, including evidence of excellent organizational skills, attention to detail etc.
  • Able to lead a large project, involving the coordination and management of senior researchers in both academic and industrial partners.
  • Excellent at teamwork and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Able to translate complex scientific topics into clearly communicated outreach via written articles, social media posts, or short explainer videos
  • Ability to travel (short trips of 1-2 days, contingent on the current travel situation).
  • Fluency in English (written, reading, spoken)

Other qualifications of considerable interest:

  • Relevant scientific background – knowledge of the principles of genomics, metagenomics, and optionally statistical genetics.
  • Experience working on EU funded collaborative research projects.
  • Experience working with CMS-based web sites.
