Job Description

We seek a professor in Place-Based Computing for the Connecting Communities Group, in the Section for Dynamical Systems (DynSys) at Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (DTU Compute) at DTU (Technical University of Denmark).
DynSys conducts research and provides teaching in the fields of mathematics, statistics, deterministic and stochastic modeling, optimization, forecasting and control. The section is very successful in attracting and working with external grants, both from national and international funding bodies. The main fields of applications are energy, finance, biology, medicine, connected communities, climate and environmental systems. The Section consists of 16 faculty members, 6 senior researchers and around 17 postdocs, PhD students and research assistants working in the general area of Dynamical Systems.
The rise of sophisticated, networked analytics across the computing continuum, including at the edge research, puts place-based computing at a new level of importance where scale is essential, and the context considered includes physical, organizational, legal, economic and social aspects. Conceptualizing, validating, and providing computational models on a large scale, while maintaining coherence across spatio-temporal hierarchies and varying complexity levels, present a significant challenge for both society and technology. Whether to reach goals of net zero or to ensure governance and safety of societies relying on ubiquitous computing, place-based computing is essential to achieving those goals.
Connecting Communities is a mission-driven group. It focuses on decentralized but digitally connected systems across sectors based on minimal but sufficient interoperability. The green-digital transition and artificial intelligence place increased demands on research and innovation that combine different disciplines and modelling classes and build a solid capacity to develop and validate theoretical models and operational platform architectures supporting localized planning, operation and governance at any scale, including large scale (place, local area, city, region, country, global region and global).
Responsibilities and qualifications
In this position, you should advance the research field of Place-Based Computing and go beyond the state of the science. You should be a driver in developing the field’s education at all levels and engage in broad research collaborations including both internal and external partners.
As our new professor you will be responsible for driving and developing a key research field contributing to DTU’s overall vision to deliver technology for people. Working with excellent colleagues at all levels of experience, you will connect mathematics, statistics and other formal models with practical validation and innovation in a multi-helix ecosystem. A professorship is a research leader position and thus you are expected to participate in administrative tasks both at departmental level and in the section.
You have a scientific background in computer science, are committed to achieve research excellence and have a strong interest in meeting societal challenges of the digital society.

  • More specifically, you: have demonstrated ability to develop, build and lead a mission-driven portfolio of activities,
  • be able to link deep academic disciplines to societal needs aligned with DTU Compute’s priorities and strategy,
  • be a recognized authority in the field and have a strong network both in the EU and globally, and preferably also in Denmark,
  • document ability to attract both partners and funding,
  • have experience in administering large (>20m€) project budgets in complex market and legal framework conditions,
  • document close collaboration with Danish and foreign stakeholders, including industry, civil society and authorities (national agencies, ministries, municipalities),
  • have security clearance to lead projects in relevant programmes, including Digital Europe.

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching and advising at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels as well as Executive MBA and life-long learning masters.
DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
Further information
Further information may be obtained from Head of Section for Dynamical Systems, Professor Henrik Madsen, tel.: +45 2083 4304 or Head of Department, Prof. Jan Madsen, [email protected] , tel.: +45 4525 3751.
