Job Description

DTU, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DTU Construct) at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a position as Professor in Machine Design and Advanced Manufacturing Systems. The professor will be affiliated with the Section of Engineering Design and Manufacturing Systems.
The Section of Engineering Design and Manufacturing Systems conducts research, innovation, and teaching within product design and manufacturing systems design. Focus areas are portfolio management, systems engineering, modular product and manufacturing architectures, product configuration, robust design, interaction design and bio inspired design. The section has a scientific staff of about 9 and currently 28 PhD students and post docs.
The research of the professor must span broadly within the field of machine design for advanced manufacturing systems, and it should cover elements such as machine design and architecture, systems integration including mechanical, electrical, software and control systems, and quality assurance.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The professor will have a leading role within the Department’s research in machine design and advanced manufacturing systems. The research must rest on a highly interdisciplinary approach combining generic disciplines such as advanced manufacturing processes, systems engineering, robotics, mechatronics and control systems, and it must relate to relevant numerical analysis and modelling as well as experimental investigations.
It is the goal that the professor will strengthen research and innovation efforts within the research field at the Department by generating new research projects that involve other relevant sections at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, and more broadly at DTU as well as abroad. Hence, the successful candidate must demonstrate a proven track record of participating in interdisciplinary research activities, and in attracting and managing research projects, also in close collaboration with industry.
The successful candidate is expected to have strong international collaborations with leading research groups in the field. Furthermore, it is expected that the professor will develop strong ties to relevant industrial partners in order to foster innovations within the field of research.
You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels. You will develop teaching activities to support DTU’s ambition about having Europe’s best engineering education including life-long learning.
DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.
The professor must be an international acknowledged expert in the research field of machine design and advanced manufacturing systems and have significant teaching experience on all university levels from the BSc level to the PhD level. The successful candidate must have academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an associate professorship, and should be an experienced self-driven scientist, with a keen eye for new developments in the general research field.
The professor must have a proven track record within some of the following research fields:

  • Machine design in manufacturing infrastructure including comprehensive experience in designing and architecting complex, interdisciplinary systems, integrating mechanical, electrical, and software components.
  • Application of automation technologies and integration of control systems in complex environments.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance standards and reliability engineering practices.
  • Mastery of advanced manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, cyber-physical manufacturing systems, robot-assisted manufacturing, desktop factories, and production line automation.
  • CAM expertise for optimizing manufacturing processes, with a focus on precision engineering, kinematics, dynamics, and complex mechanism design.
  • Systems integration, ensuring seamless interoperability and functional coherence in complex projects as well as advanced understanding and application of systems engineering principles, including systems of systems (SoS) methodologies.

Candidates for the professorship must demonstrate remarkable achievements in terms of:

  • A high international level of research production, which has contributed to the advancement of the research field.
  • A proven strong track record in attracting and managing research projects.

Furthermore, the candidate should be highly self-motivated and ready to take on new and challenging tasks (incl. participation in boards on department level). It is important that the candidate is dedicated to developing talent, and motivated to contribute to a dynamic environment where research and education on the highest international level are cornerstones.
You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
