Professor in Cryosphere Change - DTU Space

We seek a Professor in Cryosphere Change, with focus on geodetic and satellite methods for monitoring changes in the cryosphere. The position is associated with the division of Geodesy and Earth Observation (GEO) that carries out research in the fields of geodesy, geophysics and climate changes exploring satellite-based data for solutions within geodesy in Denmark and Greenland. The GEO section has in total employed ca 40 people, including approx.10 PhD students. The current cryosphere research group within GEO counts 12 people including PhD and Post Doc. 

Research on cryosphere changes is based on satellite, airborne and in-situ measurements, including ice sheets, glaciers and sea ice changes. The focus will also be on providing cutting edge research and dissemination of the results to stakeholders and the society on the effects on climate change, including the modelling of future cryosphere changes.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You are keen to develop the strategic research within satellite cryosphere research, methodologies for analysis and utilization of current and next generation radar and laser satellite missions. You will lead the DTU Space cryosphere research group and be part of the management team of the GEO section. You will have these main tasks: 

• Method development, data processing and mathematical modelling of cryosphere climate change parameters to support DTU’s strategy on sustainability and the institute’s strategic research in Greenland and the Arctic.
• Research in cryosphere geodesy and related geophysics areas, including use of satellite altimetry and radar interferometry for climate related research.
• Developing the research supporting Denmark and Greenland public sector consultancy in the field of cryosphere changes and associated geodetic aspects.
• Contribute and develop courses within assessment of changes in the cryosphere, satellite based geodesy, as well as courses offered by DTU Sisimiut Campus, Greenland on extreme climate and physical nature.
• Develop education in collaboration with national and international partners including the industry. Special emphasis to support the development of EuroTech alliance curriculum and student projects.
• Develop, plan and execute Arctic field campaigns acquiring satellite validation data in support of present and future satellite operations and development.
• Attract external funding.

Additional tasks are: 

• Develop strategic research related to cryosphere changes, addressing needs of the public sector and take lead in relevant national and international committees and working groups, in bodies like IAG, IPCC and ESA.
• Be a driving force in dissemination of results of strategic research and perspectives to the public, sector and relevant committees
• Establish new and strengthen existing networking with public and private sectors, and establish collaboration projects on innovation related to cryosphere change across DTU institutes

The division of Geodesy and Earth Observation contributes actively to Arctic DTU, Security DTU, and DTU Space Drone Centre. Parts of the teaching at DTU (in Denmark and in Sisimiut, Greenland) is coordinated with other DTU institutes.

You are expected to take a leading role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels with special attention to the program “Earth and Space Physics and Engineering”, at a high level and to be inspirational to students and colleagues.

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both. If relevant, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling you to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Salary and terms of employment 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
