At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Professor in Biorefining is open for appointment from 1st January 2022 or soon hereafter. Job description

The position is offered in relation to the research program of Biorefineries and Bioprocessing and the professor will be positioned to the section of AAU Energy at AAU Esbjerg Campus. The succcesful candidate will be a central figure in developing the Biorefining Signature Profile at AAU Esbjerg Campus, where the position is located.

The position requires research qualifications at Doctor level within the following research fields of the Department: chemical engineering/energy technology/applied microbiology, including experience in running experimental research labs with high level of analytical capabilities, high pressures, microbial lab and pilot scale equipment. The applicant should have experienced leading research groups.

Research competences should include significant experience in developing biorefinery systems using residual (waste) biomasses, aquatic biomasses, and halophyte plants. This should include experience in developing core biorefinery processes such as biomass extraction and fractionation, biomass hydrolysis, and conversion of biomass carbohydrate fractions to bio-chemicals and bioenergy by microbial fermentation – preferably both in lab and pilot scale. The candidate should also have experience in biorefinery systems modelling and evaluation. 

The candidate must have substantial experience in biomass characterization and bioactivity analysis including determination of microbial primary and secondary metabolites using methods such as HPLC, GC, GCMS, ICP, DPPH, Folin Ciocalteu, Kirby-Bauer etc. 

The candidate must document a strong international profile and experience in attracting research funding. 

Teaching will primarily be in the areas of Bioengineering topics, Fermentation processes and Biorefining Technologies at B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. level. Teaching at other study programs within AAU may occur. Experience with problem-based learning (PBL) which is Aalborg University’s main teaching philosophy is prioritized. 

The applicant should hold a PhD in applied Microbiology or Biorefining/Bioengineering research fields and have extended research at a high international research level. Teaching competences and experience must be documented in a portfolio or otherwise.

Qualification requirements:

The successful applicant can demonstrate a documented high level of original scientific production at an international level, including proven further development of the research area in question. An assessment of the candidate’s undertaking of research management and/or other possible management functions will also be taken into account. In addition the applicant is expected to have the qualifications required for undertaking teaching responsibilities. Special contributions to and development of educational and teaching related areas will be considered in the overall assessment.

Agreement

Appointment and salary acc. to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of professional Associations (AC) on Academics in the State. Employment as Professor is in accordance with a classified position on scale 37. In addition, a pensionable increment will be given.
