Postdoctoral Researcher in the Effect of Salt Precipitation on CO2 Storage – DTU Chemical Engineering
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Job Description

A 2-year postdoctoral position in the effect of salinity and salt precipitation on carbon dioxide storage is open for applications. You must be prepared to perform experimental and modeling studies in underground flows of liquids and gases, microfluidics, stochastic micromodelling of flows in porous media. The success of the study will depend on your initiative, experience, and advanced research skills.
The project will be carried out in CERE – Center of Energy resources Engineering, Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, DTU. The close collaboration with GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) is planned. The principal supervisor will be Associate Professor Alexander Shapiro (CERE, KT, DTU).
Responsibilities and qualifications
The main effect of salt precipitation under carbon dioxide storage is the reduction of injectivity of a well through which it is injected in the aquifer. This happens due to the reduction of the space available for the flow. In the current project, we suggest a program making it possible to quantify the effect of salt precipitation on permeability damage. The work comprises two studies: 1) Experimental and 2) Modelling.
It is planned to perform microfluidics experiments in the experimental study, observing salt precipitation under CO2 drying in capillaries and glass micromodels at atmospheric and reservoir conditions. The places where the salt is accumulated will be detected. As a “side effect” of the experiments, we will try determining the precipitation dynamics.
In modelling study, a model of permeability damage in a porous medium represented by a regular capillary network will be created. It will result in the evaluation of the permeability damage by the precipitated salt. The results may be used directly in the core-scale and large-scale carbon dioxide injection simulation studies in the linked projects.
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). Your background education and experience may include building the glass micromodels, stochastic mathematical modeling, study of multicomponent flows in porous media, or similar. You should be highly motivated, able to work independently, and should be confident in written and spoken English.
