About us

The Danish Cancer Society Research Center (DCRC) is an international research institute with 22 research groups and around 200 researchers and students from more than 20 nations.

The Nucleolar Stress and Disease group also has an international profile and includes researchers from postdocs to undergraduate students, a technician and the group leader Dr. Dorthe Helena Larsen. We work closely together in a friendly environment with high ambitions, and the recruited researcher will be supervised by Dr. Dorthe Helena Larsen. The group is an integrated part of the DCRC and actively participates in the scientific seminar series, invites speakers to the institute and takes part in social gatherings. Please visit our website  in order to read more about our group.

About the research project

Our research focuses on understanding the molecular pathways involved in the cellular response to DNA damage with particular focus on the nucleoli and the specialized genomic domain that clusters in this organelle, the ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA). We investigate how ribosomal DNA damage occurs, how it is repaired, and how different types of lesions are important for the onset and progression of cancer. Furthermore, we investigate how DNA damage pathways can be exploited to improve therapeutic approaches.

Currently, we offer a research project that focuses on the role of the BLM helicase in repair of rDNA and how rDNA instability contributes to the pathology of Bloom syndrome (caused by mutations in the BLM helicase). Furthermore, the project will search for new and more gentle treatment options for Bloom Syndrome patients based on new insights into the mechanisms underlying Bloom Syndrome.
