Postdoc in quantitative fish ecology and geoscience - DTU Aqua
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Job Description

If you are establishing your career as scientist and you are looking for the best possible foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions, it is right here in front of you. At DTU Aqua you will break new ground at the absolute forefront of investigating how fish navigate over long distances and why some populations fluctuate dramatically. We offer the opportunity to dedicate two years of research to this topic, with a particular focus on the hypothesis that geomagnetic anomalies influence fish migration and fish recruitment. You will join a multidisciplinary team at DTU Aqua. The work will include research in fish ecology, earth´s geomagnetic fields, and various modeling approaches in collaboration with DTU Space. The position will be integrated in the Centre for Ocean Life, representing a diverse basic research environment, bringing together researchers, PhD students and postdocs from biology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics (oceanlifecentre.dk).

Responsibilities and qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with strong quantitative and analytical skills, preferably with a background in fish ecology, and with a genuine curiosity towards the topic. The preferred programming language is Python (not a requirement) and experience with agent-based models and/or neural networks (or similar) techniques is considered an advantage. Besides modeling, research activities will include literature reviews and data compilation, as well as processing and combining large spatiotemporal datasets describing oceanography and geomagnetic fields.

In the assessment of candidates, particular consideration will be given to:

  • Experience in modeling and programming,
  • Demonstrated research success as shown by publications in scientific journals,
  • Prior knowledge about sensory systems in fish and/or geomagnetism,
  • The ability to handle large datasets and a good statistical understanding,
  • Ability to work conscientiously, independently as well as in teams,
  • Genuine interest in cross-disciplinary research and becoming acquainted with new fields of research,
  • The ability to communicate at all levels in English.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in natural science which involves analysis of large amounts of data.
