Job Description

We are looking for an independent Postdoc who also enjoys being part of an ambitious and collaborating team. You will be part of the research group for Food Microbiology and Hygiene at the National Food Institute at the Technical University of Denmark. We offer a research and teaching environment with lots of exciting challenges and opportunities. 

The position is partly affiliated to an industry partnership project to assess quantitatively the risk of reusing water in the food industry, and partly to research initiatives on application of quantitative models to ensure safety of various food products. The common aim of these projects is to find measures for resource efficient and safe production of new and traditional dairy, seafood and plant-based foods and food supplements. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be involved in research tasks investigating the role of water treatment technologies in the removal of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and virus) from process water to allow for safe reuse of this water in the production of foods. You will also become involved in other projects to assess the safety of dairy, seafood and plant-based foods and food supplements and finding solutions for development/production of stable and safe products. Additionally, you will be involved in teaching Bachelor and Master students. The work involves:

  • Mapping of hazards and problem organisms in process water collected for treatment and reuse
  • Quantitative risk assessment of the effect of water treatment options and use of the treated water in food production
  • Development of HACCP programs for reuse of treated process water 
  • Application of predictive models to ensure the safe shelf-life of foods
  • Dissemination of research results in conference contributions and scientific publications
  • Teaching general microbiological subjects at Bachelor and Master levels 

We seek a candidate with a background in food microbiology, food science, food or dairy engineering with experience in 

  • microbial ecology in food systems 
  • next generation sequencing and bioinformatics
  • identification of microorganisms
  • predictive food microbiology
  • control of food- and waterborne pathogens 

We expect that you are capable of working independently, taking responsibility for progress and have good communication skills. Written and spoken English is a prerequisite as there will be teaching obligations. Knowledge of Danish will be considered an asset.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years. The position is available from May 1st .
