Postdoc in Dairy Process Technology - Electrodialysis

The Department of Food Science, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen invites applicants for a 2 years postdoc position in the area of “Dairy Process Technology” with focus on electrically driven membrane processes from January 1st 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project

The position is associated to the “Platform for Sustainable Dairy Process Technologies” that is a dynamic industrial multidisciplinary environment supported by Danish Dairy Industry and Arla Foods.

The drivers for a competitive dairy industry have changed over time, but implementation of new technologies have historically shown to generate economic growth. Climate- and environment-friendly agriculture and food production is a prioritized area by the Danish government's green research strategy “Green Solutions of the Future”. Consequently, the dairy industry has to review the way it utilizes all the resources, to ensure the efficient conversion of raw milk into ingredients and products that are sought by consumers. Advancement of traditional technologies, and new technologies and processing solutions will to be part of the transition to a more sustainable food production. 

Postdoc position regarding Electrodialysis processes for acidification of milk

Electrodialysis with bipolar membrane technology (EDBM) has been shown to acidify milk. The main objective of this postdoc project is to assess the feasibility and viability of the EDBM technology for acidification of milk and study the functionality of concentrates obtained.  The project will be carried out in collaboration with Arla Foods Innovation center.

Tasks:

  • To investigate the effectivity of the EDBM process for acidification
  • To characterize the physical-chemical properties of the concentrates  

Required qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in food engineering; process engineering or equivalent
  • Previous experience with electrically driven membrane processes is an advantage
  • Previous experience in physical-chemical characterization of concentrates is an advantage
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and interest in working in a team of multiple partners.
