Postdoc in Advanced Biomass Combustion Technology of Greater Fuel Flexibility, higher Efficiency and lower Emissions (2021-224-03620)

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: · Department of Energy Technology · Deadline August 6. 2021;

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology a position as postdoc in advanced biomass combustion technology of greater fuel flexibility, higher efficiency and lower emissions is open for appointment from 1st October 2021 or soon thereafter. The position is available for a period of 1.5 years.

Job description

Aalborg University contributes to the knowledge building of the global society as well as the development of prosperity, welfare and culture of Danish society. This is accomplished through research, research-based education, public sector services and knowledge collaboration.

AAU educates students for the future and activities are based on a dynamic and transformative collaboration with the surrounding community.

The Department of Energy Technology is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings.

The department has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology.

The department has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is located in Aalborg.

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future.

The department has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 24 are administrative staff. In addition, the department constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world. Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

The position is offered in relation to the research program "Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer" and the Postdoc will be positioned to the section for Thermal Engineering.

Research areas will be within advanced CFD modeling of biomass combustion and CFD-based understanding enhancement, trouble shooting, and optimization of biomass combustion technology. This Post-Doc project mainly focuses on spout-firing of biomass for heat and power generation and its advanced CFD modeling and optimization. Spout-firing is a combination of the commonly used grate-firing and suspension-firing, in which large biomass particles fall down and burn on the grate at the bottom of the furnace while small biomass particles are entrained upwards and burned out in suspension in the furnace. Dynamics of biomass particles of a wide range of particle size distribution, combustion of a packed fuel bed on the grate, and suspension-firing of small biomass particles in the furnace are among the key technical issues.

The applicant should have a PhD degree, with solid background and experience in advanced CFD of solid fuel combustion as well as good knowledge in both grate-firing and suspension-firing technologies.
