Then the job as head of the Wind Energy Materials and Components division (WMC) at DTU Wind and Energy Systems might be something for you.

DTU Wind and Energy Systems is home to a strong national and international academic environment within research, innovation, education, and scientific advice. We support the green transition and the development of the advanced energy systems of the future with wind energy as the most important source of energy. The department's activities within research, teaching, innovation, and research-based consultancy are world-leading and range thematically from the materials and wind turbine designs to development of wind farms and integrated energy systems, supported by economic and societal analyses.

DTU Wind and Energy Systems is a mission-driven R&D department, and we develop and apply knowledge needed for the green energy transition. DTU Wind and Energy Systems is organized into four divisions. The WMC-division has strong competencies within both composite and metallic materials science, manufacturing and recycling, 3D printing, materials and structural testing, structural integrity, drivetrains, and wind turbine blades among many other areas. The activities in the division include fundamental research as well as application-oriented research, performed in close collaborations with industry and many other societal actors. The division is at the forefront of developing a wide range of design and testing tools, software, and methods to support the wind energy sector in the path towards net zero carbon solutions and operates world class test facilities in materials and large structures testing. The division has a prominent international position in research and education with well-established international symposia on composites materials science and education courses at bachelor, master, and PhD levels.

The WMC-division is organized in six sections:

  • Composites Analysis and Mechanics
  • Composites Manufacturing and Testing
  • Structural Design and Testing
  • Structural Virtual Testing and Digitalization
  • Structural Integrity and Loads Assessment
  • Mechanical Design, Materials & Additive Manufacturing

As Head of Division, the six heads of sections will report to you. You will take an important management position, which involves the responsibility of 80-100 highly qualified employees, including PhD students, researchers, professors, development engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. You will have overall responsibility for the division's research, education, innovation, and commercial activities, as well as the operation of research facilities. As Head of Division, you will also be part of the department's management group, which, in addition to the Head of Department, consists of three other Heads of Division and the Head of Administration. They work closely together on day-to-day operations as well as on the strategic development of the department.

As Head of Division, some of your most important responsibilities will be:

  • Professional development, coordination and quality assurance of research and innovation activities including funding applications.
  • Support and contribute to the educational activities and activities to attract new students.
  • Support and contribute to public and private sector consultancy.
  • Daily inspiring management of the division including resource management, budgetary control, and progress monitoring of activities.
  • Contributions to the strategic development of the department and to encourage and facilitate internal and external, multidisciplinary collaborations.
  • Keeping up and widening contacts and collaboration with national and international partners from the wind industry, the broader energy sector, and academia.
  • Ensuring communication and dissemination of activities and results to professional and non-professional interest groups.
  • If you wish to apply for the position, we expect you to be an excellent manager and leader with a background as an internationally recognized researcher and/or sector expert within one or more of the division’s focus areas. You must have proven management experience from a medium-large sized organization and show that you can create cohesion in the division – and across the department. You see new opportunities, inspire, and set direction in a balanced way.

    In addition, you can probably recognize yourself in many of these characteristics:

    • Good knowledge of the renewable energy sector and its dependency on research and university collaboration.
    • Good knowledge and understanding of materials and structures as well as of some of the departments other research areas and applications, coupled with a good understanding of university-level education and teaching.
    • Experience with management in a scientific environment with experimental facilities and an academic set of values – and with a well-developed ethical compass, where the human and social dimensions are important.
    • Management experience from a professional environment comparable to an academic institution, where commitment and independence are paramount.
    • Result-oriented and transparent leadership style with a focus on collaboration and delegation – and with a good balance between frameworks and freedom to fill them.
    • A large and active professional network with academic institutions and business companies in Denmark and internationally.
    • Experience and success in obtaining external funding.
    • Strong communicative skills and ability to create followship internally and externally.

    Salary and appointment terms
    The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
