Job Description

DTU Bioengineering and the CeMiSt Center are looking for a researcher (tenture tranc) transcriptomic analyses of microorganisms and microbiomes. We are focusing on microbial secondary metabolites and their role(s) in microbiomes. At the Center and the Section for Microbial Chemistry and Ecology, you will draw on the acquired competence from more than 30 years of research on bacteriology, genetics, natural product chemistry and omics-analyses. Further, the section has a large project portfolio and currently employs 50 people with diverse backgrounds including bacteriology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, genetics, natural product chemistry, microfluidics, sensor design and data analyses, thus, covering both wet-lab experimental work and computation as well as large-scale data analytics. You will be associated with the Center of Excellence for Microbial Secondary Metabolites (www.cemist.dtu.dk) that will run until 2028. The center unravels the ecological role of microbial secondary metabolites in microbial communities. The center is funded by a 10-year grant from the Danish National Research Foundation.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The position will have the following responsibilities:

  • Isolation and quality checking of RNA from complex natural systems and synthetic communities.
  • RT-qPCR (primer design, optimization) analyses of gene expression
  • Long-read (nanopore) sequencing
  • RNA seq analyses and data processing
  • Transcriptome / bioinformatics analyses 
  • Assisting in daily laboratory organization and coordination
  • Writing and co-writing scientific publications 
  • Supervision of PhD, master and bachelor students
  • Teaching on DTU courses 

To qualify for this position you should have several of the following qualifications:

  • A strong background and solid research experience in microbial ecology 
  • Solid hands-on experience in complete RNAseq-workflow, including RNA isolation, sample QC and RT-qPCR
  • Experience with bioinformatic software used for analyses of meta- and transcriptomic data set and primer design for RT-qPCR 
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Solid track record of scientific achievements (publications, patents, awards, grants, conference presentations, etc.)
  • Hard-working and dedicated to her/his work.
  • Team player with a desire to help her/his colleagues to succeed.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

Starting date is May 1st 2024 (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
