Job Description

Applications are invited for a research scientist position in ecophysiology and conservation of fishes, in Denmark.

A researcher position in ecophysiology and conservation of fishes is available at the Technical University of Denmark, National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), starting 1 May 2024 or as soon hereafter as possible. 

The position is based at the section for Freshwater Fisheries and Ecology, situated in Silkeborg, Denmark. The Section has 25 employees and focuses on migratory behaviour of freshwater fish, predator/prey relationships and reestablishment of natural fish stock and their management and offers an internationally recognised and highly dynamic scientific environment. The candidate will work both independently and in close cooperation with the staff at the institute. Main field of research will revolve around ecology, physiology and how these can be used to conserve and manage fishes in Denmark, including but not limited to brown trout and Atlantic salmon. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
The candidate will primarily work on projects studying the physiology and behaviour of various fish species, including (but certainly not limited to) salmon, sea trout and Atlantic bluefin tuna, to support our understanding of the stressors and threats they face, as well as their environmental limits, to support existing management of the species. The successful candidate should have a strong physiological and ecological background, preferably with experience in aquatic ecology. Besides strong ecological knowledge in these areas, the candidate should be proficient and experienced in studying the behaviour of fishes, particularly in the wild. Analytical skills and experience with statistical software (e.g. R, MatLab, Python) are expected as is experience in planning and executing fieldwork. Experience with various telemetry methodologies to study fish behavior (e.g. PIT, radio, acoustic, and archival) is warranted. 

Qualification requirements are:

  • PhD in a relevant field, e.g. fish physiology, fish behaviour, management and conservation of fish populations.
  • Academic record in terms of publications in relevant fields and high-impact journals.
  • Experience in assessing stressors for fish, and their impacts on populations.
  • Experience in advice and management.
  • Familiarity with recreational and commercial fishing and the Danish language.
  • Experience with planning and executing experimental studies, and fieldwork.
  • Experience using various telemetry tools to study fish ecology. 
  • Exceptional data management and organizational skills.
  • Experience with ecological and physiology data analysis and modeling, especially in R programming language.
  • Proven experience with dissemination of scientific results to academic groups and the public.
  • Strong communication experience (stakeholders, public outreach).

You will work with nearby colleagues, and with academic partners in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be: 

  • Development of new research projects in collaboration with colleagues at the sections and/or international partners.
  • Refining and further developing telemetry methods and designs used at the department, in particular with regards to incorporating physiology to further our understanding of fish ecology.
  • Publication of papers in peer reviewed scientific journals.
  • Providing advice to the Danish authorities based on scientific results.
  • Teaching and supervision BSc and MSc student projects, and be co-supervisor for PhD students.

You must contribute to the teaching of courses. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.
As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
