Job Description

DTU Bioengineering and the CeMiSt Center are looking for a talented researcher for a position as Assistant Professor in Microbial Metabolomics and Big Data analysis. At the Center and the Section for Microbial Chemistry and Ecology, you will become part of the faculty and develop mass spectrometry (MS) based approaches for our microbiome research investigating complex small molecule chemical interactions between multiple organisms in both synthetic and environmental communities. The overall aim of the center is to unravel the ecological role of microbial secondary metabolites in microbial communities. In this position you will develop and strengthen the department’s position in mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and chemical image analysis with a specific focus on state-of-the-art mining of large-scale metabolomics data for the rational improvement of high-throughput annotation of known and novel secondary metabolites, as well as prediction of entirely novel networks of biosynthetically related metabolites. You will be associated with the Center of Excellence for Microbial Secondary Metabolites (www.cemist.dtu.dk ), funded by a 10-year grant from the Danish National Research Foundation. The center will run until 2028.

Responsibilities and qualifications 
The main focus of the position is to engage in and develop the department’s competences within microbial natural product chemistry, chemical ecology, metabolomics, Big Data analysis relevant for human health, diseases and microbiome engineering.

Your primary tasks and responsibilities will include the following:

  • Implementation of novel computational based metabolomics techniques to support all stages of identification and characterization of microbial secondary metabolites.
  • Development and implementation of MALDI Imaging MS based techniques for detection and assessment of the spatial distribution of secondary metabolites important for microbial chemical ecology.
  • Engagement in close collaboration with academic and industry collaborators.
  • Dedication to scientific excellence, including publication in high impact venues.
  • Grant writing and attraction of funding related to your field of research.
  • Contribution to digitalization and data science initiatives at the department.
  • You must be responsible for the teaching of courses at the department.
  • Project management and supervision of BSc, MSc and PhD students.

You should have the following qualifications:

  • A strong background in mass spectrometry-based metabolomics of microbes and microbial communities, including analysis of large datasets using advanced computational tools.
  • Experience with the discovery and characterization of microbial secondary metabolites, especially peptide natural products.
  • Experience with MALDI Imaging analysis of microbial interactions.
  • Experience with integration of multi-omics data (metabolomics and genomics)
  • Substantial track record of peer-reviewed publications in the above-mentioned subject areas, including a clear documentation of collaboration with microbiologists.
  • Strong track record in the securement of personal and project grants.
  • Experience in translating research via innovation and entrepreneurship activities.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Track record of teaching at the university level including lecturing, teaching assistant roles, and project supervision.

Salary and terms of employment 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

Starting date is May 1st (or according to mutual agreement). The position is a full-time position.
