Job Description

DTU Bioengineering invites applications for an Assistant Professor position (tenured) in the field of Enzyme Bioinformatics. The position is mainly within discovery and function of carbohydrate-active enzymes targeting both fundamental and applied aspects of enzymology. With the position, it is a high priority to foster informatics and high-throughput analyses to identify novel enzymes and understand sequence-function relations of catalytic action, natural biodiversity of enzymes in relation to biomass modification, recycling, including breakdown of dietary fibers by microbiomes.
The position is within the Protein Chemistry & Enzyme Technology Section at DTU Bioengineering and is at the core of DTU Bioengineering’s strategic effort on digitalization, high-throughput, automation, and catalytic proteins, and at the heart of DTU’s strategic aim to create a sustainable future by developing value-creating technologies of societal benefit via cutting-edge research.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The assistant professor will join a growing, forward-looking focus of the Department targeting the advancement of innovative methods for sustainable utilization of resources and generation of value-added products from various types of biomasses via enzyme-assisted processing. The successful candidate is thus expected to contribute ambitious, innovative, forefront research within fundamental and applied aspects of developing and using bioinformatics for enzymology with clear links to societal and industrial challenges.

The assistant professor is expected to collaborate broadly within the section, the Department, and DTU as a whole and contribute forward looking digital technologies, including data handling of large datasets of sequences, as well as a range of analytical datasets. As mentioned, the desired research focus is on prediction and understanding of enzyme function and cooperativity, and on implementation of high throughput methods for experimental investigation. The position initially includes research responsibilities contributing to the Department’s externally financed projects within enzymatic upgrading of various complex biomaterials and biomass, yet the assistant professor is expected to instigate new funding applications and lead new research proposals and collaborations in the field.

Candidates must

  • Hold a PhD degree or equivalent and academic qualifications and research experience equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Postdoc.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Documented research experience within bioinformatics and genome mining in relation to enzyme discovery.
  • Deep knowledge of plant cell wall chemistry and carbohydrate chemistry in general.
  • “Hands-on” experience with enzyme genomics and assays, in particular with respect to (microbial) enzymes working on complex carbohydrates.
  • Documented research experience within enzyme characterization and enzyme kinetics in relation to biomass refining (enzyme assays, productivity terms, extended reactions).
  • An innovative, visionary mindset and a high level of intellectual curiosity.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team members.
  • International and Industrial collaboration experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Danish.
  • Demonstrated capacity to teach effectively with a focus on the student experience.

The position also includes teaching responsibilities, including supervision of BSc and MSc projects, and we expect that the candidate has or will take the Teaching and Learning course (UDTU) at DTU Learning Lab within the first year of the employment.

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
