Postdoctoral fellow in energy and maritime economics at Copenhagen Business School
As part of a newly established interdisciplinary collaboration between two centres at Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen School of Energy Infrastructure (CSEI) and CBS Maritime, we invite applications for a Postdoc position to be based at the Department of Economics.
The Postdoc will work simultaneously across both centres and for the first year of employment primarily focus on delivering an externally funded project that investigates the key role of ports in enabling the energy transition at sea and on land. The pilot project seeks to develop a research consortium with Danish, European, and international university partners, industry stakeholders, member associations, relevant authorities, and other actors that is expected to achieve a number of interconnected objectives.
The position as Postdoc involves research. The appointments will be for an initial period of two years with extension subject to funding.
The Postdoc will be employed at the Department of Economics. The department provides research, teaching and knowledge transfer within the core areas of economics, i.e. microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods. The Department is especially active in business-related, applied economic research, and comprises three esearch centres: Copenhagen School of Energy Infrastructure (CSEI), Centre for Innovation (CFI), and Pension Research Centre (PeRCent). In terms of research activities, the positions will be attached to and funded by CSEI.

CSEI and CBS Maritime research focus and responsibilities
The postdoc is expected to strengthen and contribute to the development, external funding together with the leadership of CSEI and CBS Maritime, and promotion of research areas of CSEI and CBS Maritime. One of the main priorities is the continuation of the pilot-project, and its alignmend with other and broader green transition topics, which are of increasing importance for CBS.
CSEI’s research is focused on European energy issues, while we also have a global research outlook. The research priorities and strategy of CSEI are decided by the Director of the centre. The focus areas of CSEI’s research include, but are not limited to, the following areas of applied energy economics, regulation, and policy research:
- Energy infrastructure economics and finance
- Regulation of energy networks
- Energy market design
- The Green Deal and energy transition
- Energy system integration, sector coupling, and renewable energy integration
- Energy technology and innovation analysis, e.g., power-to-X, hydrogen, and low carbon technologies
- Energy business models
- Energy in developing countries
CBS Maritime is a cross-department research center focusing on the challenges and opportunities to shipping, ports and the broader maritime sector. It addresses a broad spectrum of research questions relating to firm strategy and organization; innovation and entrepreneurship; finance and investments; competition and industrial dynamics; digitalization and data-driven growth; and sustainability and green transitions. Especially, CBS Maritime has a strong focus on sustainability, climate and environment with the ambition to support the green transition of the sector. Current focus areas include:
- Management tools, technologies and practices for reducing shipping emissions
- Decarbonization of the international shipping industry (energy efficiency, marked-based measures, alternative fuel innovation and uptake)
- Sustainability criteria for alternative marine fuels
- Port call optimization and ship turnaround
- Port logistics
- Ports as industrial clusters
- Ports and the circular economy
- Ship recycling and remanufacturing strategies for marine equipment
CBS and departmental responsibilities
- Individual and group-based research at high international standards
- Promoting CBS’s academic reputation
- Communicating findings to the wider public and to CBS’s stakeholders in particular, including participating in the public debate.
- Research, including responsibility for the academic development of the relevant discipline
- Publishing, scientific communication
- Active participation in research activities, such as research seminars, workshops and conferences
Qualifications and skills
- Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degrees in Energy Economics, Economic Geography, International Business, Law, Development Studies, Global Value Chains, Comparative Political Economy, Ports and Clusters, Network Thinking and Modelling or relevant fields
- Strong passion and interest in the green transition and the climate change agenda
