The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Clinical Professor and Chair in the field of Renal Medicine as per

1 September 2024

or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a combined position at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital and is a permanent full-time position.


About the Department of Clinical Medicine

As a Clinical Professor and Chair at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is one of the largest health science research departments in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialities and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. Department of Clinical Medicine has approximately 30,000 square meters of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities, and advanced scanners are available. The department has overall responsibility for the Master's degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 425 academic employees and the same number of PhD students cooperating across disciplines. About the Department of Renal Medicine

Department of Renal Medicine employs 31 medical doctors of which 15 are specialists in nephrology and cover all significant subspecialities. The staff includes 4 clinical professors (including the Chair), and 7 associated professors (one is a nurse and one is a biologist) and in addition four adjunct professors (three international). The Department has an extensive international collaboration and enjoys working with other specialities and disciplines including basic science and publish approximately 45 scientific papers in international medical and specialized journals each year. The research activity covers all areas with relevant research ideas including transplantation and hypertension.

The Department engages in clinical as well as paraclinical collaborations and cover detailed basic research methodologies, experimental animal models and health service as well as organizational and epidemiological research contributions. The department has a well-established training program for upcoming young scientists and a well-equipped research laboratory with research nurses, biotechnicians and a research secretary/personal assistant for the Chair Professor. The research is considered the core element in maintenance and development of the Departments clinical functions.


Your job responsibilities

As Clinical Professor and Chair in the field of

Nephrology you will, together with the consultant nephrologist and the head nurse constitute the department leadership responsible for clinical development. The team members have equal and shared responsibilities and decision influence for all aspects of leading the department, each making use of their different professional competences.

You will be responsible for the maintenance and development of the department's research and teaching environment, and you will contribute to the implementation of the faculty's overall research strategy. You are expected to contribute – both independently and in collaboration with others – to the development of the department by leading research of high international quality and contributing to ensuring a high academic and didactic standard in the teaching. Qua your excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network, you contribute to the academic development at Aarhus University and to the university’s profile both nationally and internationally.

As Clinical Professor and Chair in the field of Renal Medicine, you have the overall responsibility for the pre-graduate theoretical and practical education in nephrology in the whole Central Denmark Region. It will be expected that you participate and lead all aspects of providing a state-of-the-art pre-graduate education such as lectures, developing learning goals, organise examination and clinical training. Your job is described in detail and regulated by the "Agreement on clinical professors ” between Aarhus University and The Central Denmark Region.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
  • Active participation in and equal contribution to the department leader team.
  • To contribute to the external research network and funding.
  • Assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
  • Research-based collaboration with private and public-sector stakeholders as well as research-based consultancy.
  • Dissemination of your research to the outside world.
  • Ability to influence regional and governmental regulatory authorities.
  • Technique-, Technology- and infrastructure development in a medical field with rapidly increasing caseload.
  • Further development of the diverse research activities at the department. The success of the department should be the driving force rather than the success of individuals.
  • Leadership for teaching of medical students.
  • Driving force of the development of Renal Medicine in The Central Denmark Region, nationally and internationally.
  • Secure development of the speciality through recruitment and talent management.

During your employment at Aarhus University, you will report to the Head of Department Jørgen Frøkiær and at Aarhus University Hospital to the Head of Hospital.

Appointment as Clinical Professor and Chair requires concurrent employment as Chief consultant at Aarhus University Hospital department of Renal Medicine.

Your competences

You have established yourself as a prominent clinical researcher and in the forefront of clinical development within Nephrology, and you possess solid leader, research and teaching qualifications at a high international level. You have proved capability to initiate and develop ways of improving and expanding the research within all fields of the speciality, that can be used at all hospitals in The Central Denmark Region including the highly specialized Aarhus University Hospital with multidisciplinary approached where you are able to be a respected lead. You have solid experience as main PhD-student supervisor and shown strong abilities towards career development for colleagues at all academic levels from junior to senior. You have broad regional, national, and international cooperative partnerships and great experience of research partnerships with private and public-sector stakeholders. You have also documented ability to attract external funding.

You are ready to take co-responsibility, together with your co-leaders in the department management, for the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university levels as well as nationally and internationally.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching. Spoken language is Danish.
