Automation Scientist for Synthetic Biology and Sustainability - DTU Biosustain
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Job Description

DTU Biosustain is looking for a scientist to work within our automation team.

At DTU Biosustain we develop the next generation of biosustainable technologies using synthetic biology. We create novel methods and technologies as a foundation for development of new environment-friendly products, better and less energy consuming manufacturing processes, new medical treatments, climate-friendly alternate protein sources, etc. In other words, we try to solve some of the biggest challenges in the history of humankind, and you will get the chance to add your mark to this.

The DTU Biosustain automation team is a part of the biofoundry. We use laboratory automation to rapidly develop novel solutions and workflows to increase the throughput and hands off time of the research projects at the center. We work with diverse research teams to implement automation across several types of laboratory research. This position offers an opportunity to gain hands on experience in a range of advanced laboratory automation robots and work at the cutting edge of sustainable biotechnology research.

Responsibilities and qualifications
As a scientist in the automation team your tasks may include:

  • Operation and maintenance of our liquid handling and cultivation platforms (Agilent Bravo, Tecan Fluent, Pioreactor, Opentrons, Labcyte Echo)
  • Scripting and developing workflows across these instruments
  • Discussion with research groups as we work very closely to deliver workflows that are useful to their projects and need to have an understanding of the relevant science
  • Some general manual laboratory and molecular biology tasks (eg. PCR, streaking, preparing media etc)

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Laboratory experience handling microbes, cloning etc.
  • Able to efficiently communicate with other members of an international research team in English
  • Ability to work independently
  • Some experience with programming (eg. Python)
  • Experience working with liquid handling robots, automated cultivation platforms or microfluidics is advantageous

As a formal requirement you must have a masters or PhD degree in biotechnology, synthetic biology, microbiology or similar.

You will receive support and training as needed on the operation of our liquid handling platforms. We tend to work on the cutting edge of new techniques and while we have a supportive and collaborative group, you will need to be comfortable investigating and solving problems yourself.
