Associate Professor of Health Services Research in Prehospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in the field of health services research with a focus on coherence and organisation in the near and prehospital healthcare system as per 1 December 2026. The position is a permanent, 20 pct. part-time position.

As an Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialties and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square metres of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities and also advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the Master's degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 670 academic employees, 500 PhD students and 160 technical/administrative employees who are cooperating across disciplines. As an Associate Professor, you will be working at Aarhus University Hospital or another hospital in the Central Denmark Region. As an associate professor, you will be based at Research & Development (R&D), Prehospital EMS, Central Denmark Region. R&D is formally affiliated with the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University, and is anchored in a strong practice-based prehospital research environment. The department works closely with the entire Prehospital EMS organisation, where research, development, clinical practice and implementation are closely integrated.

Since 1 January 2026, the University Clinic for Prehospital Care has been integrated into R&D following joint accreditation by Aarhus University and the Central Denmark Region. The University Clinic further strengthens the close integration of research, clinical practice and education within R&D.

R&D’s Research Strategy 2026–2030 has the vision Landmark knowledge for the benefit of the patient and is organised around four research themes: Critical Decision Making; Critical Interventions; The Individual and the System; and Coherence and Organisation.

The position is part of the new research theme Coherence and Organisation, which explores how coherent patient pathways can be organised across organisational boundaries to support a sustainable healthcare system. The theme draws on perspectives from health services research, implementation science, organisation studies and user involvement. It responds to ongoing changes in the healthcare system, where assessment, treatment and follow-up increasingly take place closer to citizens through collaboration between prehospital services, hospitals, general practice, municipalities and civil society.

As Associate Professor of Health Services Research in Prehospital Emergency Medical Services your primary tasks will be research and research-based teaching. You will teach and supervise students at bachelor’s and master’s level, and you will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with both Danish and international colleagues. You are expected to establish and lead an internationally recognised research programme within the new research theme Coherence and Organisation.

Your main tasks will consist of:

• Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
• Teaching, guidance and examination of Bachelor’s and Master's degree students, as well as possibly supervision of PhD students.
• Some degree of contribution towards attracting external research funding.
• Establish and lead an internationally recognised research programme within the new research theme Coherence and Organisation.
• Conduct research on coherent patient pathways across organisational boundaries to support a sustainable healthcare system and develop interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research collaborations.

You will report to the Head of Department Christian Fynbo Christiansen.

You have documented research qualifications within health services research or a related discipline at a high international level. Experience with research in prehospital emergency medical services is expected. You are a clear communicator and have experience with supervision and teaching at bachelor’s and master’s degree level. We draw attention to completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar, as well as experience with the establishment of PhD courses and external research collaborations. You have experience conducting interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research and have demonstrated the ability to establish and sustain research collaborations across healthcare sectors. Experience with implementation research, user involvement and qualitative and/or mixed-methods research will be considered an advantage.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good work environment.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

• Appointment as an associate professor requires research and teaching qualifications at the level that can be achieved through the satisfactory completion of a period of appointment as an assistant professor, but may also be obtained in other ways.
• The applicant is required to have completed a university pedagogical programme or an equivalent programme.

• The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
• Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health .
• The yearly base salary for a fulltime associate professor is DKK 706.233,06 (including a position related supplement, a pre-agreed associate professor supplememt and pension (18.07%)). Additional supplement(s) can be negotiated dependent on experience, special qualifications and performance of special functions. Authorisation supplement(s) will be granted, if relevant for the position. Your local eligible trade union representative at Aarhus University negotiates your salary on your behalf.
