Associate Professor in Science Studies

The primary workplace of the position is at the Copenhagen Campus. There will however be teaching and research obligations at both the Copenhagen and Aalborg campus. Therefore, travel between Copenhagen and Aalborg must be expected.

The position will primarily be attached to the section Human Digits: Human-centered Digital Technology and Science, which focuses on understanding and improving human experiences through the use of technology. The section conducts research within three main areas: interplay between people and digital technologies, collaboration and digital learning, and impact and communication of academic research. 

The selected candidate will conduct research and teach within at least four of the following areas:

  • Interdisciplinary research
  • Research organization and dissemination
  • Impact studies
  • Science Communication
  • Meta research
  • Philosophy of science

In terms of teaching 

The position includes teaching at the Department’s educations and applicants are expected to have teaching experience in one or more of the above-mentioned areas.

The employed associate professor are expected to deliver high quality teaching, supervision, and associated examination, as required across the range of modules offered on the on the Bachelor and Master programmes in Communication and Digital Media. The department also offers Continued education on e.g. interdisciplinary research management and mission-oriented management. Teaching and supervision here is also a possibility. 

In relation to teaching, applicants should document: 

  • Experience, skills and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to deliver high quality teaching, using a range of pedagogical approaches including problembased learning, project supervision, group work, interactive seminars and lectures 
  • Ability to teach, supervise, and assess written and oral performances in Danish. Given the international elements in some of the Danish degree programs, the successful applicant must be able to teach in English as well as Danish. International applicants are expected to learn Danish 
  • Aalborg University works with a problem-based learning model(PBL). Documented experience with PBL is not mandatory, although it would be an advantage. If you haven’t completed a PBL-course, you will be required to do so within your first year of employment.

In terms of research 

The position includes research at an international level and applicants are expected to have research experience in one or more of the above-mentioned areas. 

The employed Associate Professor is expected to undertake research and publish research output of an internationally recognized quality and engage in external research networks and collaborations. 

In relation to research, applicants should document: 

  • Experience, skills and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to produce high quality research outputs and publish in international journals 
  • A personal research plan which is consistent with the Department of Communication and Psychology research strategy and demonstrates the potential to develop new research projects 
  • Experience, skills and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to develop external and/or international networks and collaborations 
  • Experience, skills and achievements that demonstrate the ability or potential to engage in activities with actors outside academia to enhance the impact of research
  • Experience with external funding is an advantage but not a prerequisite. 

The employed Associate Professor is expected to undertake research and publish research output of an internationally recognized quality and engage in external research networks and collaborations. 

The announced position will play a pivotal role in advancing the Department's strategic goals by building upon our existing strengths in science studies, mission-driven research, basic research, and interdisciplinary research. In this context, key research activities may involve active participation in several research projects and initiatives, including:

  • The Interdisciplinary Integration of AI and Social Sciences and Humanities(REPAI center, funded by the Grundfoss Foundation).
  • Acting as a Knowledge Broker to assist in developing policy guidelines and briefs, creating non-scholarly formats for science communication, and fostering meaningful interactions and dialogues with decision-makers(funded by the Velux Foundation).
  • Contributing to Aalborg University's ambiton as a Mission-driven institution(ie. in participating in developing mission based approaches, follow up research etc.)
  • Other expectations 

    Document experience, skills or achievements which demonstrate the ability or potential to work collaboratively with colleagues at the department and with colleagues at other departments 

    Participate fully in the day-to-day activities of the Department, section and research groups and here encourage and foster a positive and collegial working environment 

    Demonstrate great written and oral communication skills. 

    During the employment as an Associate Professor, the selected candidate will be expected to engage in knowledge collaboration within the portfolio of the position and participate positively and constructively in the day-to-day activities at the Department.

    ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP
    An appointment as associate professor is a permanent appointment which includes an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To some extent, additional tasks may be defined by the University.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
    Applicants for the associate professorship are required to possess research qualifications at such a level as can be attained through the successful completion of a term of employment as assistant professor, researcher, postdoc or other similar positions. Applicants must document research at an international level. In addition, applicants are assumed to have received supervision and pedagogical skills development and to have obtained a positive written assessment of their teaching qualifications.

    Assessment
    Applicants will be assessed by an assessment committee.

    Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select applicants for assessment. Before shortlisting takes place, all applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

    All assessed applicants  will get the opportunity to comment on their own assessment, and may subsequently be invited to an interview and/or asked to give a trial lecture.

    When the employment process has been terminated, a final rejection will be sent to the applicants who are not considered for the position.
