The School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of Associate Professor in Art History with a focus on Architecture and/or Design based in the Art History section of the Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology.

The appointment is full time and tenured and begins on 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position

We are looking for an applicant with strong research and teaching qualifications in the fields of Architecture and/or Design. The preferred applicant has a broad and visionary research profile that includes both historical and practise-based approaches to these fields, including urban planning, and investigates the role of space and place, in cultural and social life.
If the applicant only has qualifications in either Architecture or Design the applicant must also be willing to develop qualifications and research in the other field.

In the degree programmes in Art History, theoretical and analytical insight is deepened through practical exercises and projects that are often carried out in collaboration with external partners. We are seeking an applicant with theoretical and practical capacities to work in this field and to qualify the methodological aspects of practice-oriented teaching in Architecture and/or Design within the department. When teaching and planning courses, the successful applicant will be expected to reach out to and collaborate with external partners. It will be considered an advantage if the applicant also has documented experience of or a theoretical foundation for doing practice-oriented research.

The successful applicant is expected to contribute actively to the academic and collegial activities related to the Art History degree programmes and to be physically present daily. The successful applicant must have strong academic competences and must be willing to participate in multidisciplinary teaching and in collaborative research activities.

In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated applicant who will enhance the research and teaching profiles of the department nationally and internationally as well as contributing to Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Research

The section for Art Historyat Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant international profile and a robust research network within Art History, Visual Culture and Museology.

The successful applicant will be expected to take a role in developing research in the field(s) of Architecture and/or Design. The successful applicant will be expected to publish original peer-reviewed research internationally as well as making scholarly contributions to developments within the field. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in relation to both the field(s) of Architecture and/or Design and the research community at the department in terms of new collaborative research projects with internal and external partners, and in connection with external research funding.

Teaching and supervision

We are looking for applicants with teaching and supervision experience in the field(s) of Architecture and/or Design at university level.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD degree or must document equivalent qualifications in a relevant field
