Associate/assistant professor (tenure track option) in Public Administration & Digitalization at the Department of Politics and Society

The Department of Politics and Society is organized in four disciplinary clusters and the successful applicants should contribute to research and teaching within the Public Administration and Digitalization cluster. Associate and assistant professors are expected to develop an international research profile at the highest academic level and publish in relevant high-impact academic journals. The department seeks to increase its visibility and scientific impact by increasing co-publishing with international partners and its share of publications in the top one and top ten percent most cited journals. The successful applicants are expected to contribute to achieve this goal.

Teaching tasks will be focused in the areas of public administration, public management and research methods at the BSc, MSc and midcareer master program in public governance. Successful candidates have a scientific background in political science or public administration. Documented qualifications in working with quantitative and computational research methods, and experience with programming is considered an advantage but not a requirement.

Applicants should indicate clearly if the position is applied for at the level of assistant professor or associate professor.

Assistant professor
An assistant professorship is a fixed-term position with an obligation to conduct research and teaching activities. To a limited extent, additional tasks may be defined by the department. The appointment includes a requirement to attend a course in university pedagogy for assistant professors organized by the university. Applicants for assistant professorships must demonstrate research and teaching qualifications equivalent to those achieved after the successful completion of a PhD scholarship, and employment as assistant professor must not exceed a total period of four years at the same institution.

Tenure track option
Highly qualified candidates can be appointed tenure-track assistant professors on a six-year contract with the prospect of performance-based advancement to a tenured position as associate professor. An internal assessment committee will conduct a mid-term evaluation after three years, and an external assessment committee will conduct a final review after 5.5 years. The candidate is expected to meet the criteria for permanent employment as associate professor at the end of the tenure track period, and if the assessment is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as associate professor.

When hiring tenure track assistant professors, Aalborg University will have special emphasis on:

  • A documented high degree of independence in previous education and employment
  • Demonstration of considerable potential as one of the best in the academic field of the position
  • Academic experience from other universities and/or research institutions- preferably international experience

Associate professor
An associate professorship is a permanent appointment with an obligation to carry out research and teaching activities. To some extent, additional tasks may be defined by the department.

Qualification requirements
The formal qualification requirement for the position as associate professor is research qualifications corresponding to the level achieved from successful employment as an assistant professor/researcher or postdoc with some teaching obligations. Applicants for an associate professorship must have produced a body of independent high-quality peer-reviewed international publications and demonstrate progression beyond academic work related to the PhD dissertation. Employment as associate professor presupposes a positive assessment of documented teaching qualifications.

Assessment
An assessment committee will assess all candidates.

Shortlisting will be applied. Hence, following the deadline for applications the head of department, supported by the chair of the assessment committee, selects candidates for academic assessment. All applicants receive information whether or not they are selected for assessment. The selected applicants receive information about the composition of the assessment committee, and are given an opportunity to comment on the assessment of their own qualifications. As a final stage of the process, a statement of the outcome is sent to all applicants.

Appointment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities(the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Science's Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Salary is in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations(AC) of Academics in the State.
