The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark invites applicants for a three-year position as an assistant professor in STEM Education with a focus on Teaching Mathematics.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU and located in Odense. It is focused on research and teaching in Mathematics and Computer Science, as well as specializations in teaching these disciplines at primary, secondary and tertiary level. The assistant professor will be part of the STEM Centre for Research in Science Education and Science Communication.

The department wishes to strengthen its research profile in STEM Education with a focus on Teaching Mathematics. The applicant should expand and complement our current activities, and a key part of the assistant professorship is research in the LabSTEM project, which is funded by the Novo Nordi sk Foundation in collaboration with PI Professor Connie Svabo. Thus, we are seeking an assistant professor who aims to contribute to our centre research programme, mentor undergraduate and research students and contribute to our educational programmes and teaching activities in the areas of Mathematics Education and STEM.

A documented track record of research project leadership will be an advantage, as will a strong list of publications in peer-reviewed journals.

The competence profile of the successful candidate bridges deep expertise in Mathematics Teaching as a research topic, an interest and expertise in STEM as an interdisciplinary approach to science education and organizational competence and experience.

We are seeking outstanding candidates with strong analytical and problem solving skills, who are strong in written and oral communication (in English and Danish), who have a deep understanding of the Danish educational system, and have doc umented experience in the development and leadership of research projects.

The successful applicant is expected to have a PhD and research background within Mathematics Education. Postdoctoral research experience is strongly preferred. Documented experience with teaching, outreach and/or the ability to attract external funding will be considered an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in Teaching in Secondary Education and to supervise undergraduate and graduate students in Maths who specialize in Teaching Mathematics.

To gain qualification as associate professor, an assistant professor is expected to obtain external funding to support research activities and publish in high impact peer-reviewed journals from research performed at SDU. In addition to these criteria for research excellence, the department expects the candidate to excel at teaching, as documented through teaching evaluations, and to serve on various committ ees.
