Offer Description

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant Assistant Professor in Organization Theory and the impact of funding on organizational forms at the Department of Organization. The position has a duration of three years, including six months of teaching. The candidate is expected to start no later than September 1, 2024.

This is an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Professor to contribute to a substantive collaborative research program, titled “The Impact of Big Funding on the Outcomes and Institutionalized Form of the University” (details available upon request), under the supervision of Associate Professor Jane Bjørn Vedel. The research program, which is funded by a Novo Nordisk Foundation grant, explores how field-level changes in financial structures affect organizations’ institutionalized outcomes and form. The program has an empirical focus on the field of higher education and how the rise of large-scale grants for research affects institutionalized practices and structures in universities. This Assistant Professor candidate will be responsible for studying how the impacts of a large-scale research center on a university unfold over time.

The Assistant Professor candidate should have substantial training in Organization Theory and familiarity with institutional theory. Other relevant areas of expertise include time and temporality, professions and expertise, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Since the research program relies on extensive qualitative data, the position requires experience with in-depth qualitative research (mainly interviews and archical methods) and willingness to reside in the Copenhagen area. Moreover, the candidate should be willing to participate in data collection in Australia and the Netherlands for shorter periods of time. The work involves close collaboration within an existing research team that includes the PI, two postdocs and one PhD candidate.

The Department of Organization (IOA) pursues a problem-oriented, business in society approach to understanding and intervening in organizations and organizational life. Our research is focused upon organizing processes and their outcomes, and driven by an interest in organization and management as a practical, situated, contested and changing matter. Our approach is interdisciplinary and combines social-scientific traditions such as organization theory, sociology, ethnography, political economy, and social psychology. Methodologically, our research is predominantly qualitative and often involves case study and fieldwork methodology.

The Assistant Professorship is a position with research and teaching obligations (6 months).

To fulfill the research requirements of the position, the applicant(s) chosen is expected to be physically present on a regular basis and actively participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department. The successful applicant is obliged to participate in the Assistant Professor program at CBS on teaching principles and methods in order to fulfill the pedagogical requirements made at the end of the term of employment as Assistant Professor.
