Assistant prof. in Condensed Matter Theory

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: 01 Apr 2022

Niels Bohr Institute
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) (nbi.ku.dk) at the University of Copenhagen (ku.dk) is seeking applicants for an assistant professor position in theoretical condensed matter physics. The position is for three years. As part of the faculty renewal program at the Niels Bohr Institute, within the next three years a permanent faculty position will be opened, relevant to (but not restricted to) the area of theoretical condensed matter physics. Applicants are expected to have an outstanding research profile and a vision to establish an independent research program and, as well, to interact with the existing research groups at the Niels Bohr Institute.

Description of the scientific environment

The project will be funded by a grant from the Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education (SFU). The position will be part of a comprehensive new Danish research environment (Q-MAT) in magnetism, superconductivity, and quantum materials, related to upcoming research at the ESS, and embedded in the condensed matter theory group at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. Significant collaboration is expected to take place with local people at NBI, including e.g. B. M. Andersen, K. Flensberg, P. Hedegård, K. Lefmann, J. Paaske, and international collaborators, and experimental condensed matter physics groups. The research activities of the current position will also be closely connected to the ESS-DMSC (ESS-Data Management Center) where theoretical progress in materials modelling may be transferable to data-analyzing software relevant for the ESS instruments C-SPEC, T-REX, and BIFROST.

Current research groups at NBI in the field include the condensed matter theory group (cmt.nbi.ku.dk ), x-ray and neutron sciences (nbi.ku.dk/english/research/condensed-matterphysics/ xns /), and the Center for Quantum Devices (qdev.dk ). Other divisions at the Institute include quantum optics, astrophysics, biophysics, geophysics, and particle physics. The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within physics. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered. Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen.
The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
