A postdoc position in the Pig-Paradigm project

Updated: 24 days ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 02 Apr 2024

Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (ANIVET), Aarhus University, invites highly qualified applicants for a postdoc position within the Pig-Paradigm project, starting from 1/6-2024 or soon thereafter, and focusing on molecular microbiology in relation to gastrointestinal function and health of pigs. The position is a fixed-term position for 3 years. You can read more about Pig-Paradigm here:

.

The successful candidate will become an essential member of a multidisciplinary team of scientists from Aarhus University, University of Copenhagen, Aalborg University, Wageningen University, and University of California-Davis. The overall research aim of the Pig-Paradigm project is to prevent infections in the gut of developing piglets, thereby reducing the use of antibiotics, and thus reducing the spread of antimicrobial resistance – by disentangling the interface of diet, the host, and the gastrointestinal microbiome.

The postdoc candidate will work on the gastrointestinal-associated microbiome in pigs, primarily focusing on the robustness and resilience of the microbiome in the pre- and post-weaning periods. The research focus will be e.g., to investigate the influence of factors like diets provided as milk or liquid feed supplements before weaning, diets provided after weaning, environment and stressors on parameters related to the gut microbiome, microbial metabolism and formation of microbial metabolites, and how these factors may overall influence the gut in a positive or negative direction in connection to weaning. Samples for the analysis will be provided from different pig experiments performed in other sub-projects of the Pig-Paradigm project activities at ANIVET. The candidate should be motivated to implement state-of-the-art tools and techniques within microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics in the work.

Qualifications within several of the following key areas

  • Academic qualifications at PhD level in microbiology, biology and/or veterinary sciences.
  • Experience with molecular techniques for microbiota characterization.
  • Experience in the use of bioinformatics as a tool to integrate microbial and various omics data.
  • Preferable research experience in controlled intervention studies with piglets.
  • Significant skills in data analyses of experimental and bioinformatic data
  • Significant skills in scientific communication of research results

The project will contribute to mitigate the use of antibiotics for the weaning of piglets. The candidate will contribute to attract external funding within this area of research and will participate in knowledge exchange with society and industry as well as in teaching and supervision at Bachelor, Master, and PhD level.
