The Department of Atmospheric Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague (Czech Republic) wishes to fill one full-time postdoc position in the field of Meteorology and Climatology with a focus on analysis of climate model outputs and their uncertainties.

Position available from April 1st 2024 and is for a 3 year period with possible extensions up to 9 years in total.

Gross monthly salary (depending on previous eligible experience) starting at 65.000 CZK. The candidate will join the climate modelling and analysis team of the department involved in the Project of Johannes Amos Comenius Programme (P JAC) “Natural and anthropogenic geohazards” no. CZ.02.01.01/00/22_008/0004605.

We are looking for a person with a strong background in atmospheric physics, meteorology and climatology, with rich experience in statistical analysis of global and regional climate model outputs. The task will include post-processing and analyzing model results, applying statistical methods for their assessment, analyzing model uncertainties, presenting analyses at conferences and publishing regularly in peer-reviewed journals.

In addition to a relevant educational background, the candidate is expected to have a good working knowledge of UNIX-based operating systems, good programming skills in one or more languages (Python, R, Fortran, Linux shell) and knowledge of basic statistical techniques. 

Requirement profile:

- Strong theoretical background in:

  • Meteorology and climatology

  • Climate change and its impacts

  • Mathematical statistics

 

- Technical skills:

  • Climate model data formats (netcdf, grib etc.) and related tools (cdo, nco etc.)

  • Advanced knowledge of R and/or Python data processing modules

  • Experience with Linux operating systems: working in command line mode and shell scripting

 

- Further requirements:

  • Completed PhD in a field related to atmospheric research, meteorology and climatology

  • Strong publication record in the fields highlighted above as well as international orientation and recognition

  • Willingness and ability to lead own research

  • Experience in the acquisition, management and implementation of research projects

  • High motivation, ability to work in a team, independence
