Offer Description

Are you a postdoctoral researcher considering your next career move? Are you interested in furthering your understanding of photocatalytic microplastics degradation using TiO2 Mesocrystals?

If you are, the Institute of Physics of Materials (IPM) of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno, Czech Republic,  invites you to apply jointly for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship 2024 (call ref. HORIZON-MSCA-2024-PF-01-01).

We are located in the education hub of the Czech Republic, Brno. the second largest city in the Czech Republic. The Institute was established in 1955 as a part of the newly founded Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Since that time it has been continuously developed to the present day. The Institute has 10 scientific research groups and more than 160 (140 FTE) employees at present. Almost half of the staff are scientists (i.e. with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree). If the MSCA fellowship is obtained, Dr. Sanjay Gopal Ullattil, who is a new member of the Structure of Phases and Thermodynamics Group and a former Marie Curie Fellowship awardee, will be your supervisor.

Dr. Ullattil's research focuses on exploring the synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic applications of mesocrystals, a superstructure composed of a uniform array of nanocrystals. On the environmental application part, his research is currently devoted to the photocatalytic degradation of microplastics. It has been proved that the constituent nanoparticles of a mesocrystal can collectively perform the microplastics degradation by surface morphing. On the energy application part, he is also working on hydrogen storage using nanoparticles and mesocrystals.

If funding is granted, you will work closely with the members of the interdisciplinary 'Structure of Phases and Thermodynamics Group'. Your project needs to focus on the synthesis of TiO2 Mesocrystals or Mesocrystal Hybrids and explore their potential applications in the photocatalytic degradation of microplastics.

Eligibility criteria and profile:

  • PhD holder (up to 8 years from the date of award)
  • The candidate may be of any nationality
  • The candidate must not have resided in the Czech Republic for more than 12 months during the last 3 years
  • Excellent publication track record

Benefits:

  • Support and guidance of the Supervisor and our Grant Office when writing the proposal to help you achieve the competitive edge
  • Very supportive and interdisciplinary research environment
  • An attractive place to live – people-friendly town
  • Competitive employment conditions if funding granted
  • In the Czech Republic, the MSCA PF research proposals have a triple chance of getting funded due to synergies with other sources of funding. If you don´t succeed in reaching the funding threshold in MSCA PF, but your application receives a seal of excellence, the project should automatically be eligible for funding from national funds. The third option is to use the facility of ERA Fellowship under the widening scheme.

How to apply?

Interested applicants are invited to send the expression of interest consisting of:

  • cover letter (1 page max.) outlining your project idea and showing what experience you will bring to IPM.
  • CV (including a list of publications and projects experience)

Please send your expression of interest by 15 June 2024 to: [email protected]

The selected post-doc candidate will develop a MSCA-PF proposal in cooperation with the supervisor and our Research Support experts.
