Offer Description

The Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC ), Masaryk University, CZ,

is announcing the opening of a postdoctoral position for a

Bioinformatician / Computational biologist

We are seeking a highly skilled bioinformatician / computational biologist with substantial expertise in plant genomics to contribute to a research project focusing on the in-depth analysis of genome structure and evolution in the genus Boechera (Brassicaceae). This role is essential for the three-year research project led by Dr. Terezie Mandakova and funded by the Czech Science Foundation.

Research project description:

The genus Boechera (Brassicaceae) comprises around 480 genetically distinct taxa, mainly distributed in North America. The genus includes diploid sexual species, as well as allodiploid and allotriploid apomicts. Heterochromatic apomixis-associated chromosomes have been identified in apomictic Boechera plants. Due to its small genome, close evolutionary relationship to Arabidopsis, and naturally occurring diploid sexual and diploid apomictic lines, the genus Boechera represents a unique model system for studying the genomic changes associated with apomixis. Recent improvements in long-read sequencing and algorithmic advances in genome assembly enable telomere-to-telomere genome assembly, including complex (peri)centromeric regions. Our goal is to analyse Boechera genomes using long-read sequencing methods to investigate links between hybridisation, chromosome reorganisation, and the evolution of apomixis. This project will provide in-depth evidence on the genome structure and evolutionary dynamism of apomictic Boechera genomes and will contribute to uncovering the genomic impact of apomixis. This will enable the development of more refined hypotheses about the underlying molecular mechanisms leading to the expression of apomixis in general.

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline such as genetics, genomics, molecular biology, mathematical biology or bioinformatics
  • Proficiency in genome sequencing methods
  • Hands-on experience analysing ONT, PacBio HiFi, and Hi-C data to conduct chromosome-level assemblies and genetic and epigenetic annotation
  • Excellent understanding of the plant genome structure and mechanisms of genome evolution
  • Strong publication record
  • Extensive experience in running individual research projects
  • Proficient in both spoken and written English
  • Experience in mentoring students
  • Exceptional communication skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently and collaboratively, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude

We provide:

  • An exceptional research topic in plant genomics
  • A collaborative environment that encourages interdisciplinarity and intersectoral research
  • A three-year postdoctoral position with a full-time (40 working hours/week) contract with the potential for further extension
  • Involvement in a project led by a highly motivated and enthusiastic principal investigator
  • An attractive salary
  • Flexible working hours
  • Remote work
  • No restriction on gender, nationality, age,  or current location

  • Welcome Office  service before arrival
