ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR or ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

The Department of Classical Studies invites applications for a full-time Associate Professor or Assistant Professor with a focus on Classical Greek language and literature. The prerequisite for the position of Associate Professor is a completed or ongoing habilitation in Classical Philology or General Linguistics (habilitation thesis with a focus on Classical Greek), and for the position of Assistant Professor a completed doctoral degree in Classical Philology or Classical Greek.

MAIN JOB CONTENT

Education

  • Teaching of language courses and literary seminars for Classical Greek language and literature. Conducting optional lectures according to the specialization of the candidate. Teaching in Czech.
  • Supervision or opposition of qualification theses.
  • Membership in state bachelor and master examinations committees.
  • The assistant professor furthermore:
    • Participation in the organizing of pedagogical activities.
  • The associate professor furthermore:
    • Membership in committees for state doctoral examinations and doctoral dissertation defenses, membership in committees for state final examinations or state rigorosum examinations.
    • Opposing doctoral or habilitation theses or participating in habilitation or professor-nomination committees.
    • PhD-mentorship activities.
    • Acting as a study programme guarantor and/or member of the doctoral study programme board.

Research

  • Research and publication activities in the field of Greek studies (independent research tasks, publication of results in recognized peer-reviewed journals / scientific monographs / peer-reviewed proceedings).
  • Active pursuit of grant projects.
  • Active participation in domestic and international scientific conferences and professional meetings and presentation of research results.
  • Associate professor furthermore:
    • Reviewing and opposing projects at the national level within the relevant field.

Other

  • Regular administrative tasks in the administration of own courses, use of e-learning, and communication with students via the MU Information System.
  • Promotion of the field of study.

WE REQUEST

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:

  • Completed or pending habilitation in classical philology or general linguistics (habilitation thesis focusing on classical Greek).
  • Specialization in Greek/Classical Philology.
  • Involvement in international cooperation (studies, conferences, scientific cooperation).
  • Relevant publishing activity in the field of Greek/Classical Philology.
  • Positive attitude towards teaching and ability to combine teaching and research activities.
  • (Co-)principal investigator experience in research projects is an advantage.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:

  • A Ph.D. in Classical Greek or Classical Philology is a prerequisite.
  • Specialization in Greek/Classical Philology.
  • Ability to work independently in a professional and scientific capacity.
  • Proactive approach to the development of the field of studies.
  • Positive attitude towards teaching and ability to combine teaching and research activities.
  • Previous publishing activity an advantage.
  • Prospect of an early start of the habilitation procedure an advantage.

Specification of the candidate's international profile 

  • For Assistant Professors, work experience abroad in the form of a study, professional or work placement.
  • Experience in international research projects as a principal investigator or team member is an advantage.

Length of experience required

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Greek studies / classical philology / general linguistics.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:

  • Previous teaching/professional experience is not required but is an advantage.

Other knowledge and skills  a requirement or an advantage)

Language skills

  • Knowledge of Czech/Slovak (native speaker or C2) - a prerequisite.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English (demonstrated by previous international publications, conference presentations or internships) - a prerequisite.
  • Knowledge of classical Greek at a level appropriate to habilitation/completion of doctoral studies in the field of the discipline - a prerequisite.

Requirements related to job content

  • Presentation, organizational, didactic, and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and engage them in learning.
  • Standard computer proficiency (MS Office, MS, Teams, Zoom, etc.).
  • Conceptual and systematic in own pedagogical work.
