The ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (www.eratosthenes.org.cy ) of Cyprus University of Technology (www.cut.ac.cy ) invites applications for one (1) Remote-Sensing Data Synergy Scientist to join its fast-growing team of passionate and enthusiastic professionals. This position is open on part-time of full-time (100%) basis.

 

In the framework of the European Union Teaming Project EXCELSIOR, a Ground-Based Remote Sensing Station (GBS) for profiling of aerosols and clouds is being established at the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, in Limassol, Cyprus. The station will consist of a ground-based Raman lidar, cloud radar, microwave radiometer, Doppler lidar and photometer systems installed in two mobile 20-foot containers. The GBS will conduct continuous profiling of atmospheric parameters (aerosol, clouds, precipitation) above Limassol, Cyprus, and in potential future field deployments. All activities are strongly linked to the international framework of the Aerosols, Clouds and Trace gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS). For the implementation of the operation and the scientific exploitation of the GBS multiplatform equipment, a position for a data synergy scientist is advertised.

 

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specialising in Earth Observation, space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has a 13-year experience in earth observations and geospatial analysis. Through the “EXCELSIOR” H2020 Teaming Project (https://excelsior2020.eu/ ), ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus’ development. ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.

 

A core activity of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.

 

Appropriate measures of success will be collaboratively determined based on the Centre’s strategic growth plan and sustainability targets. These will be revised periodically by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Setting up and maintaining data processing chains for the GBS; 

Setting up, combining and further developing the Cloudnet and PollyNET processing chains in accordance with ACTRIS guidelines;

Development and provision of data visualization, access and evaluation tools; 

Development and application of synergistic methods for aerosol and cloud research in EMMENA region; 

Production of scientific output, such as journal articles, conference contributions, or public-relations output;

Writing and publishing scientific papers; 

Connecting data to the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence Data Cube; 

Bringing together ground-based and spaceborne data using ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence Data Cube; 

Supervising students; 

Any other relevant duties deemed necessary.

PhD in a discipline of the natural sciences, informatics or mathematics; 

Interest in atmospheric research and atmospheric processes in the Mediterranean region;  

Experience with data processing and big data analytics;

Experience on the management of synergistic multi-instrument data chain; 

Experience in managing varied workloads and conflicting priorities.

Benefits

The appointment will be for a period of one year (12 months) with the prospect of renewal depending on funding availability. All appointments are subject to completion of a probation period of six (6) months.

 

The annual gross salary for the (full-time) position will range from €36732.10 to €41408.54, depending on qualifications. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary (the cost of the 13th salary is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration).
