Working for Energy & Climate Action

University of Alberta’s Energy & Climate Action (E&CA) works to minimize the environmental impact of its operations on behalf of all students, staff, faculty and other members of the campus community. E&CA is responsible for overseeing the University’s multi-million dollar Energy Management Program, Envision, which implements energy efficiency and conservation measures across campus and the University of Alberta’s greenhouse gas inventory, which allows the University to measure the climate impact of its operations and design strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to leading these two initiatives, our interdisciplinary team works with other Facilities and Operations units to encourage and support the advancement of sustainability initiatives in their areas of responsibility.

Position 

Reporting to the Manager, E&CA, the Program Coordinator implements and supports a variety of F&O sustainable operations programs and initiatives, manages projects, participates in strategic planning processes, liaises with internal and external stakeholders and assists with supervising the E&CA sustainability assistant as well as occasional student staff.

Duties 

  • Works with Directors, Managers and staff within the Portfolio of Facilities and Operations to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and ongoing improvement of sustainability programs and initiatives related to the University of Alberta’s operations
  • Researches, identifies and communicates sustainability benchmarks across all units of Facilities and Operations
  • Recommends new programs and initiatives that contribute to the achievement of benchmarks and short-term and long-term institutional goals
  • Provides strategic advice and makes recommendations to the Manager, E&CA on a wide variety of existing and emerging sustainability issues
  • Prepares reports, briefings and presentations on issues related to campus sustainability; Develops written content for websites, newsletters and other internal and external mediums
  • Leads projects for which E&CA is directly responsible, from initial research, program and business planning to project management, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting
  • Assumes responsibility for establishing, monitoring and reporting on budgets of the various initiatives being managed and led by the Coordinator
  • Oversees and assists in recruitment of consultants, service providers and student interns retained by E&CA
  • Liaises with and supports students, staff and faculty members interested in developing projects that further sustainable operations at the university
  • Connects with and develops relationships with external stakeholders and partners interested in advancing sustainable operations at the university and in the greater community
  • Participates in and supports engagement of Manager, E&CA in Portfolio and University-wide strategic sustainability planning processes, including development of the Sustainability Plan and related unit plans for units in Facilities and Operations
  • Collaborates with the University of Alberta’s Sustainability Council on various aspects of communications and outreach and engagement initiatives, including needs assessment/identification, program implementation and evaluation

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum undergraduate university degree, with preference to courses of study related to sustainability and its application on reducing the environmental impact through an operational lens; Related graduate degree is preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated, relevant experience and exposure to sustainability, preferably in the public sector
  • Clear understanding of the principles underpinning environmental sustainability and ability to apply those principles in assessing preferred courses of action
  • Ability to think critically and strategically in a way that enables problem-solving and the resolution of conflicts
  • Demonstrated project management experience with strong time-management skills and the ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills; successful candidate must be able to comfortably and effectively work with people at all levels of the organization
  • Self-motivated and flexible, ability to manage competing priorities and meet project deadlines in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Ability to represent the Department and University in a professional manner across all levels of the organization and to external stakeholders
  • Excellent informal and formal verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency in a Windows environment using MS Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic facilitation experience and familiarity or experience with change management theory is an asset
  • Working knowledge of GIS technology and applications is also an asset
