A highly talented post-doctoral fellow is sought to engage in both research and research translation initiatives for a new research organization being established at the University of Toronto called the Laboratory of Applied Informatics Research (LAIR). The lab focusses on large-scale cyberinfrastructures for data, software, and autonomous intelligent agents (robots) in support of collaborative, open, scalable and distributed compute-intensive tasks for critical domains such as healthcare, advanced research, online education and cultural preservations. The fellow is expected to have strong expertise in one or more of the following areas: text mining and retrieval, data visualization, user modeling, federated data architectures, and distributed AI. The goal of the lab is to create new search and retrieval algorithms, user-machine workflow methods, and multimodal and intelligent user interfaces. A strong plus would be familiarity with AI and analytics methods that focus on bias mitigation and support equitable and fair interactions with systems and data. Experience in translational research activities such as organizing international research conferences and workshops, handling invention disclosures, patents, and licenses, and launching for- or non-profit spinoffs from academic labs will be given high weight in consideration. Description of duties: perform research required by the faculty supervisor, organize conferences and workshops, collaborate on writing papers, participate in regular research group meetings.

Salary: $40,000.00 – $50,000.00 per year


Qualifications: The candidate must possess a PhD degree received within last 5 years. Additionally, the candidate should posses a strong background in information / computer sciences with expertise in information retrieval systems and associated experimental research methods. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.

Term: Full time, one year contract, possible renewal upon mutual agreement and funding availability.

FTE: 40 hours per week, full time.

Work Location: In person. Postdoctoral Fellows are required to be located in geographical proximity to the applicable University premises to attend and perform their duties on University premises as of the starting date – meaning on campus or remotely working close to campus.

Employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto is covered by the terms of the CUPE 3902 Unit 5 Collective Agreement. The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week for a full-time postdoctoral fellow (pro-rated for those holding a partial appointment) recognizing that the needs of the employee’s research and training and the needs of the supervisor’s research program may require flexibility in the performance of the employee’s duties and hours of work.
