Facilities Management and Planning is a trusted customer focused service provider with a work environment that promotes the creative and effective utilization of resources through consultation with Facilities Management and Planning staff, the community and service providers.

The Position
Working under the under the supervision of the Manager, Mechanical Services, the Plumber is responsible for installing, assembling, maintaining and repairing or troubleshooting pipes, fittings, or fixtures for heating/cooling, water or drainage systems, according to specifications or standards or plumbing codes in Ontario. Complies with the health and safety procedures and guidelines provided.

Other daily responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Maintains and repairs all plumbing systems including but not limited to, pipes, fixtures and drains, for water distribution, heating and cooling, ventilation, sewers, and water mains;
• Installs heating and cooling units;
• Installs pumps and vessels;
• Rebuilds pumps and installs mechanical seals;
• Solders and checks for leaks on broken pipes;
• Opens clogged drains with various manual and powered drain cleaning equipment;
• Checks and maintains fire hydrants;
• Estimates, and records materials, and time required for work orders;
• Lays out work, assembles equipment and fabricates as required; assures work area is kept safe and clean;
• Assists with other trades i.e. steamfitters, air conditioning and electrical, etc.; and
• Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
• Knowledge of the Ontario Plumbing Code and the National Building Code.
• Skills in interpreting blue prints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, and manufacturer’s installation and maintenance materials.
• Working knowledge of computers and FMP computerized maintenance system will be an asset.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and manuals related to job function.
• Ability to effectively work individually, as part of a team or diverse groups.
• Ability to follow through and carry out assignments
• A creative approach to problem solving
• Knowledge of hazards involved with work and safety measures to be taken
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers

Working Hours:
40 hour work week with 8 hour shifts (Monday to Friday)


Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
• Job requires completion of a valid Plumber Journeyman Plumber License for the Province of Ontario or equivalent.
• Job requires minimum 5 years of experience including the apprenticeship-training program, which consists of on-the-job/ work experience of 8,280 hours and 720 hours of in-school training

Health and Safety Requirements

This position is regularly required to work on campus in person. If this happens, you will work with your direct manager to set up a remote work environment including discussing appropriate technology and requirements. You are required to follow all University policies and directives, including to set up a safe and confidential workspace in a remote location and ensure all Carleton property (intellectual and other) is safeguarded. If required to work remotely, you will be notified by your manager when working full time physically onsite will resume.
