Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a facility, a large laboratory or several laboratories. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Establishes priorities and schedules of projects. Coordinates execution of projects and service. Prepares quotations. Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency. Develops methodology. Analyses and interprets data. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Administers accounts. Prepares budget proposals. Maintains equipment.
 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of a facility, a large laboratory or several laboratories. Coordinates the execution of experiments, projects and services. Establishes priorities and ensures adherence to schedules. Ensures efficiency and quality of output.

  • Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods. Makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency including recommendations on staff requirements.

  • Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks in fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, histology, toxicology, microbiology, immunology and molecular biology.

  • Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

  • Reviews, tests, evaluates and modifies equipment and methodology. Develops methodology. Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates the provision of equipment. Designs and fabricates specialized equipment as required.

  • Compiles experimental and analytical data. Prepares reports. Analyses and discusses results and their interpretation with others. Maintains records and files.

  • Maintains computerized information systems and participates in their development.

  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

  • Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.

  • Ensures appropriate inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material.

  • Performs accounting functions such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers and resolving discrepancies. Forecasts costs of supplies, materials and equipment. Prepares invoices. Prepares budgets or budget proposals.

  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

  • Uses a variety of equipment such as microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, cryostats, microtomes, computers, photographic and audio-visual equipment.

Other qualifying skills:

  • Undergraduate degree in Science (biomedical or neuroscience) preferred.

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience in a laboratory setting.

  • High attention to detail.

  • Understanding budgeting and ordering

  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively with others in a team environment.

  • Experience working in a biomedical and/or neuroscience lab.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic accounting principles and proficiency with PC/Mac applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
