Working for the Department of Renewable Resources

The Department of Renewable Resources (RenR) in the Faculty of Agricultural Life and Environmental Science (ALES) is seeking a Research Technologist/Planning Coordinator with the Southern Alberta Watershed Project, under the direction of the principle investigator (PI) Professor Dr. Uldis Silins.

Position

Under the direction of the principle investigator (PI) Professor Dr. Uldis Silins, the successful candidate will be required to collaborate with another position to supervise seasonal field staff in the collection of hydrological and meteorological data from a large instrumented watershed program in southwest Alberta. He/she will assist with coordinating field resources (accommodation/major equipment and vehicle resources) to meet research program objectives. This position will also be responsible for assisting with the coordination of the field research program along with industrial activities in the study area to ensure OH&S of field research staff and graduate students. He/she will also assist with project reporting and manuscript preparation.

As a field Research Technologist, travel and outdoor field work in Southern Alberta with varied hours in remote locations are a requirement of this position.

Duties

  • Installs and maintains field instrumentation such as stream gauging equipment, groundwater wells, dataloggers, and environmental sensors
  • Organizes, structures, and summarizes collected data, and makes it available to the University research group and other interested parties involved in the form of spreadsheets, databases and reports
  • Assists with training and supervision of summer staff and graduate students in field techniques
  • Assists with liaison duties between the University, researchers from other universities, and various external partners
  • Assists in data analysis and interpretation
  • Assists field staff with field sampling and monitoring of existing field research installations/instrumentation
  • Assists in preparing annual reports, presentations, proposals and budgets relating to the project
  • Coordinates/schedules logistics needed by external researchers/graduate students such as use of project resources (accommodation/major equipment)

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Forest Science or Environmental Studies with strong course background in hydrology, watershed management, and aquatic ecology; BSc preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered 
  • Work experience and understanding that incorporates multidisciplinary projects in hydrology, water budgets, chemistry, ecology, and boundary layer climatology
  • Experience working in a research environment, specifically:
    • Requires a firm understanding of hydrology and meteorology concepts and processes
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience carrying out water sampling and monitoring techniques
    • Experience installing and maintaining hydrometric and meteorological equipment including field experience in installing and maintaining groundwater and surface-water hydrological equipment, such as weirs, groundwater wells and piezometers
    • Familiarity with snow, snowmelt and topographic surveys; surveying experience
    • Experience with basic backcountry navigation and all-terrain vehicle operation
    • Ability to work independently in the laboratory and the field, with moderate direction, working within established practice, procedures
    • Excellent analytical and computer skills
    • Experience training and supervising junior staff is a desired asset
    • Experience in writing reports/proposals, producing presentations and maintaining budgets
    • Clear driving record and quality to operate U of A vehicles
  • Ability to handle heavy equipment (50lbs) with experience/knowledge of 4x4 trucks, ATVs, trailers, chain saw, small auger drilling rig and hand augers
