Fume Hood Testing Technician

This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

This competition will be used to fill up to four positions. 

These are 16-week, full-time Casual Level 1 positions from May 6 - August 23, 2024. Due to the project schedule requirements, the successful applicants are expected to work full-time for the entire 16 weeks.

Locations - Work takes place at four University of Alberta campuses

  • North Campus, Edmonton
  • South Campus, Edmonton
  • Campus Saint-Jean, Edmonton
  • Augustana, in Camrose, Alberta.

Building service workers, engineers, technologists, peace officers and tradespeople help keep all five of our campuses maintained and operating safely and efficiently. This group supports our community through operating, maintaining and renewing our infrastructure and providing a number of safety and security services.

As per the Fire code, all fume hoods in University of Alberta laboratories are to be tested annually to ensure proper working condition.

Position Summary 

Working in a team setting, the incumbents will conduct fume hood inspection and testing in University of Alberta laboratories following the University's testing protocol. This is an excellent opportunity for students with a strong mechanical engineering background to learn about building air systems and standardized testing.  In addition, this opportunity will enrich their learning and provide a different perspective on the application of their knowledge and interest in Mechanical Engineering.   

Duties

  • Conducts fume hood testing in University of Alberta laboratories as per testing protocol
  • Enters testing results into a Facilities & Operations database
  • Collects information on fume hood use practices
  • Prepares test reports
  • Maintains testing equipment to ensure it is in working order
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office is essential
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team setting are essential
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good time management skills are required to achieve project milestones
  • Ability to work full-time for the 16 consecutive weeks of the position May 6 – August 23, 2024
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work with limited direct supervision
  • Ability to follow written procedures precisely and consistently over a long time period

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of 2-3 years of post-secondary studies in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, preference given to current students of the University of Alberta
  • Experience with AiM business enterprise software would be considered an asset

** Full-time students enrolled at the University of Alberta hired for hourly paid roles as Casual Level 1 are not eligible for benefits. As a result, they receive a 1.5% pay premium.
