Department/Faculty Summary

The goal of Information Services is to provide exceptional Advancement systems support, business process management and design, automated reporting solutions and data delivery for the Development and Alumni offices within External Relations. Information Services supports the strategic planning and operational effectiveness of all alumni relations functions as well as key fundraising programs including the annual fund, major gift and planned giving, alumni engagement programs, prospect management and research as well as major Advancement fundraising campaigns.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Program Lead of Data Analytics within Information Services, the Data Analyst is responsible for supporting and furthering the Data Analytics program which supports the strategic and operational needs of the External Relations portfolio. This role actively consults with internal and external stakeholders to develop an understanding of data driven decision making tools offered to the Alumni and Development offices.

The Data Analyst will continuously develop their expertise in data and data delivery tools/techniques to continually support the forward momentum of the Analytics program – thus continually offering new, improved, and innovative analyses and storytelling techniques. The Data Analyst will work directly with a variety of stakeholders to influence the best way to report on data to achieve accurate and effective results as they pertain to alumni, fundraising and development activities.

The Data Analyst will have the ability to translate client needs from a business perspective into technical requirements needed for solutions development and back into a finished product that is both technically sound and digestible to stakeholders and unit managers. Therefore the Data Analyst is “multilingual” in all areas of client services and technical development. The Data Analyst will act as a subject matter expert in data analytics for External Relations.

Duties

  • Tableau Dashboard Development & Report Automation: Develop new, exciting and visually appealing dashboards to meet unit goals and needs efficiently and effectively using the Tableau Desktop platform. Support, maintain and enhance the existing suite of reports and dashboards and respond to user inquiries. The Data Analyst will also create elegant and reliable solutions to automate report generation and data collection using a variety of reporting tools and programming languages such as R, Python, or via API interfaces.
  • Descriptive Data Analysis & Benchmarking: The Data Analyst will be called upon to perform routine and non-routine data analysis and investigation. This includes providing thorough data examinations and analyses from all angles of the development lifecycle and providing actionable insights (data storytelling) and metrics to all levels of leadership and staff within the portfolio. The Data Analyst will also be responsible for conducting annual University/department benchmarking surveys with the appropriate governing bodies. The accuracy of data submitted to these studies is of paramount importance.
  • Predictive Analytics Program Support: Develop and validate predictive models to feed the pipeline of prospective donors in order for the department to achieve fundraising goals. Provide impactful insight as to how to develop affinity and predictive behavioral models to support short-term and long-term engagement and fundraising strategies.
  • User Training & Admin: Provide classroom/online/ad-hoc training for Tableau users on a variety of dashboards and/or create training modules/videos as needed. Complete onboarding/exit tickets as they relate to dashboard access. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum post-secondary degree required.
  • Preferred undergraduate degree in Business specializing in Management Information Systems and/or Operations Management or undergraduate Science degree in Computing Science and/or Statistics.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in data analysis/reporting.
  • Experience in managing projects from inception to completion with an emphasis on time management, scope identification, communication with stakeholders, and documentation.
  • Experience in managing and interpreting large datasets from multiple sources including biographical and financial data and a strong understanding of the best way to visualize/present data.
  • Strong understanding of Oracle databases, table structures and data relationships.
  • Proficiency in Oracle SQL in order to effectively and efficiently query large data sets.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to develop presentations and briefing notes for a wide array of audiences including executive leadership.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Strong customer service skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic and data interpretation skills; detail-oriented, creative, inquisitive, persistent, and self-motivated in applying research and analytical abilities in meaningful ways to support the university’s fundraising goals.
  • Ability to support multiple projects while working under tight deadlines without compromising project goals or quality of deliverables.
  • Self-motivated and willingness to work in a fast-paced collaborative team environment.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, with an emphasis on Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms, Team Drive).
  • Strong understanding of data mining and trend analysis.
  • Exemplary computer, information management and data retrieval skills, excellent communication and statistical analysis skills.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies/applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in post-secondary advancement or a fundraising environment is a strong asset.
  • Experience in a classroom/online training environment (assisting and/or instructing) is a strong asset.
  • Experience in machine learning and predictive modeling is an asset.
  • Knowledge in Python/R is an asset.
  • Experience in connecting to API’s and the ability to extract, transform and load data from third party web-servers to local data repositories is a strong asset.
  • Experience with Tableau is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Rapid Insight’s suite of predictive modeling tools is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ellucian Advance ERP system is an asset.
