Working for the Augustana Faculty

Augustana enrolls over 1000 undergraduate students in baccalaureate degree programs on a residential campus in the city of Camrose, 90 kilometers southeast of Edmonton. The Campus is located on Treaty Six territory which provided a traveling route and home to the Cree, Blackfoot, and Metis, as it did for the Nakoda, Tsuu T’ina and Chipewyan, and other Indigenous peoples. Their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create a rich heritage and ongoing model for our learning and our life as a community.

The Faculty is committed to building on its reputation for academic rigour, high-quality teaching in the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences, and extensive opportunities for students in the areas of community service-learning, undergraduate research and place-based learning. Position summary

The Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta invites applicants for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Physical Education, contributing to the science-based human movement area of the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Physical Education. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in kinesiology, exercise science, physical education, or a related field. A post-doctoral fellowship or commensurate experience is an asset.

Augustana offers BA and BSc degrees with a major in Physical Education. The Physical Education program at Augustana educates undergraduates as researchers and critical thinkers in preparation for the many roles they adopt in future careers. We seek an emerging scholar with a demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness and the potential to contribute to the study of Physical Education in the context of the liberal arts and sciences. They should have a clear research program with the potential for external funding.

The Physical Education major includes foundational courses in human anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, injury prevention, training methodologies, and quantitative analysis related to kinesiology, sport, and physical activity. The successful candidate will be involved in shaping the science-oriented components of the Physical Education program, including the development of senior courses in their area of expertise. Faculty members at Augustana are also expected to teach in the Faculty’s project-based core curriculum (https://www.ualberta.ca/augustana/about-us/advantage/core.html).

The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for a strong and sustainable research program in an area related to the science of human movement. Research plans should incorporate undergraduate researchers. Augustana does not have a wet lab but does have an exercise physiology space appropriate for several types of data collection related to functional mobility and exercise testing. Camrose offers many opportunities to focus, in particular, on functional mobility/health in aging or athletic performance.
