Offer Description

The investigation of sugarcane defensive genes in response to herbivore insects revealed molecular interactions between plants, insects and fungi. A set of PR-4 proteins called Sugarwins was upregulated in sugarcane in response to the insect pest Diatraea saccharalis in the borer-rot complex. These proteins affected Fusarium verticillioides and Colletotrichum falcatum but did not affect larval development or mortality. Understanding this complex indicated that fungus modify volatile and entice female, non-contaminated moths to lay their eggs in infected plants for field fungal dissemination. This initiative investigates borer-rot complex multitrophic interaction. Studying this technique will reveal how insects detect volatiles and how fungi affect plant-insect interaction.

Candidate profile: Bachelor's and PhD in biology, agronomy, biotechnology, or similar discipline. Experience in plant-insect-pathogen interaction, molecular biology, microbiology, lab-reared insects, and bioinformatics. Candidates must be innovative and able to build a competitive research project independently under team leadership. Excellent English or Portuguese writing and speaking skills. Collaboration with academic scholars is ideal.

The fellow will be based at the University of São Paulo's Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ-USP) in Piracicaba, Brazil.

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality. The selected candidate will receive a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in the amount of R$ 9,047.40 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent on items directly related to the research activity.
