DistriNet is an international research group with extensive expertise in secure & distributed software. Embedded in the department of Computer Science of KU Leuven, DistriNet brings together a substantial critical mass of over 100 researchers, including 14 full-time professors, 11 permanent research staff members, 13 postdoctoral researchers, and about 70 PhD researchers. The conducted research is systems-centric, always application-driven and often performed in close collaboration with industry. The know-how of DistriNet formed the basis of multiple spin-off companies (https://distrinet.cs.kuleuven.be/spinoffs/). Within DistriNet, a team of more than 30 researchers works on and with security middleware platforms. We focus on authentication, authorization, auditing and security analytics, while applying relevant AI and (adversarial) machine learning techniques. We apply our findings in case studies in real-life application domains, including e-health, industry 4.0, e-finance, e-media and e-government.

Responsibilities

Broken access control ranks the top place in the 2021 OWASP Top 10 web application vulnerabilities, and incorrect implementations or updates of access control policies are often the cause of such vulnerabilities.
By joining our research team, you will play an important part in addressing increasingly sophisticated access control attacks with AI-driven authorization and auditing of next generation cloud, fog and edge applications. You will be challenged to make access control smarter by tackling authorization challenges in any of the following topics of interest:

  • machine-learning based risk models for intelligent distributed policy enforcement in cloud, fog and edge environments,
  • testing and verification of access control policies with machine learning,
  • attacks against broken access control and blind spots of AI-enabled authorization systems,
  • distributed application monitoring and privacy-preserving auditing of application logs and audit trails with federated machine learning,
  • dynamic and adaptive policy-based access control for ever-evolving cybersecurity threat landscapes.

Profile

You share our strong interest in Cybersecurity, data and AI, and you have

  • a master in computer science (or equivalent),
  • an analytical mind,
  • technical skills,
  • and fluent English communication skills.

Offer

We offer a full-time position as researcher, with or without a PhD trajectory in computer science :

  • you will join a supportive and collaborative team in which you can develop know-how and expertise in state-of-the-art technologies,
  • you will have the opportunity to build up research and innovation skills that are essential for a future career in academia or in industry,
  • you will work in a multicultural working environment at the KU Leuven High Tech Campus.
