It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. YOUR TASKS
Are you passionate about circularity and wood? Would you like to conduct research? Then this position is for you. You will be involved in the CIRCOMP project: Developing a circular steel-timber composite floor system through innovative and demountable shear connections. This project is a collaboration between UGent-Woodlab and the Construction Engineering Research Group (CERG) at UHasselt. As a researcher at UGent-Woodlab, you will focus on the hygroscopic behavior of the cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor element and how this can affect the reusability of the wood-steel system. Additionally, you will collaborate and exchange research insights with the CIRCOMP researcher at UHasselt, who will focus on the mechanical performance of the wood-steel connection. Specifically, you will conduct the following research:
• To assess the disassembly and reusability of the developed systems after long-term loading and repeated (cyclic) loading including assembly-disassembly-reassembly loops;
• To evaluate the effects of “dynamic” hygroscopic behaviour of wood undergoing continuous moisture variations on the wood-steel system, with dimensional changes being limited by the connection between materials;
• To assess durability of materials when exposed to outdoor environments;
As part of the scientific personnel, you will also undertake research support tasks within UGent-Woodlab (to a limited extent), publish your findings in scientific journals, and present them at (international) conferences.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a Master's degree (preferably in Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering-Architecture, or Industrial Engineering: Construction or Industrial Design Engineering Technology).
- Preferably, you have research experience with wood or other bio-based materials and/or research experience related to moisture behavior in materials.
- You can communicate fluently (both orally and in writing) in Dutch and English.
- You can plan and execute your tasks independently and efficiently.
- You have excellent communication skills.
- You function well in a team setting.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a contract of definite duration for the period from 2 years.
- Your contract will start on 1/08/2024 at the earliest.
- Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4. Click here for more information about our salary scales .
- All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
