Offer Description
In the framework of the project AMC3-DEFRA23 “Automated Methodology for Common Criteria Certification”, we are looking for a full-time researcher/scientist in cyberdefense with a Bachelor or Master of Science degree in ICT, Computer Science, or equivalent.
Context
The Royal Military Academy of Belgium (RMA) is a military institution responsible for the basic academic, military and physical training of future officers, and for the continuing advanced training of officers during their active career in the Belgian Defense department (www.rma.ac.be ). It is fully recognized as a university, fulfilling the same criteria as civilian universities. The Royal Military Academy is also conducting scientific research at university level for projects funded by the
Belgian Defense department or external sources.
You will work within the Cyberdefense Laboratory (CyLab) of the Royal Military Academy. The laboratory staff teaches academic courses at the Royal Military Academy and in the inter-university Master in Cybersecurity. The lab also organizes short workshops. The courses and workshops cover the following subjects:
- Networks and network security;
- Distributed information systems;
- Information security;
- Forensics and malware reverse engineering;
- Management of cybersecurity.
The research interests of the cybersecurity laboratory currently focus on:
- Detection of Advanced Persistent Threats (APT’s);
- Detection of cyber-attacks using machine learning and AI;
- Cyber training systems and cyber ranges;

Study
For this project, we aim to develop a methodology for performing automated certification and accreditation, assemble a set of tools that support this methodology, and validate the methodology on two typical Defence related use cases. The first use case is an in-house developed APT detection tool for protecting government and military networks, while the second might be a weapon-system piece of software.
Main Tasks
Analyse the state of the art in the field of Cyber Ranges, as they are essential for doing research in the cybersecurity domain;
- Compare solutions, design and implement them and continuously maintain and improve the Cyber Range as a whole, including its virtualised environments;
- Put in place a digital twin of an in-house developed APT detection tool and continuously test and modify it in a simulated environment;
- Study approaches to formal validation techniques and tests for automatic validation of cybersecurity properties and correct the system or the requirements by means of learning algorithms;
- Possibly disseminate the work and findings through reports, publications and conferences.
