researcher-expert in data sciences - Health data infrastructures for remote clinical monitoring
Background
The faculty of medicine and life sciences contributes to sustainable solutions for health related issues as part of the civic Hasselt University. The faculty focusses on excellence in education and research and connects with society through a strong collaboration with our partners. Starting from continuous attention for quality and innovation, the faculty is a breeding ground and magnet for talent with an open view on society, from the region to the world.
The vision of the research group in Biomedical Data Sciences is that one day every single person gets the medical treatment they deserve in a timely manner. We are convinced that Data Saves Lives and that our healthcare system can be transformed if we supercharge it with insights gained from Big Data. Therefore, we investigate new methods to handle and analyse Big Data. The interdisciplinary research group of biomedical data sciences (PI: Liesbet M. Peeters ) is part of the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED) and the Data Science Institute (DSI) of UHasselt . The group is part of the Universitary MS Centre (UMSC), a collaboration between UHasselt and the Rehabilitation and MS Center of Noorderhart Pelt . Besides UMSC, the MS Data Alliance and the MS Use Case within the Flanders AI Research Program , the MS DataConnect Initiative , and the “remote clinical monitoring center (RCMC)” are flagship projects of our research group. The RCMC is a modular data-integration, data-analytics and integrated healthcare service platform, will empower care professionals, researchers as well as entrepreneurs in new digital solution and system development, testing and launching, and will become a permanent driver for digital health innovation, (re-)using data both for care optimisation and scientific/clinical research at a regional, not institutional, scale.
Job content
In light of the further development of the Remote Clinical Monitoring Center, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join and strengthen our research team. This includes the following tasks:
  • Performing research on the development and the application of AI supported methods to speed-up the set-up of multidisciplinary data infrastructures. More specifically, our research group focuses on AI supported methods for federated data infrastructures, data wrangling, data integration and data visualization. There is a lot of freedom to choose the personal research topic, as long as it is situated within the topics of the group.
  • Overall project management of the RCMC project, with a specific focus on the technical part
  • Co-supervision of (at least part of the) PhD students within the research team. Some examples of the PhD projects that are currently being executed within the research group can be consulted here (https://www.uhasselt.be/UH/biomed-Onderzoek/Principal-Investigators/Liesbet-M-Peeters-Research-group-in-biomedical-data-sciences.html).
Profile
  • You have a PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent field. We encourage junior PostDocs to apply as well.
  • You are familiar with aspects of data mining and machine learning and you have a proven research track record in at least one of: federated data infrastructures, data wrangling, data integration, data management, or data visualization.
  • You have hands-on computer science skills in a range of programming languages (e.g., Python, C++, Java, R, …) and libraries, and can learn new languages/libraries/tools in a short amount of time if necessary. In addition, you are comfortable operating modern compute environments (e.g., Linux, Docker, virtual machines, …).
  • You have passion for science and are excited to develop original contributions in computer science focused on multidisciplinary data infrastructures.
  • You are pragmatic and focused, but creative at the same time. An independent and practical personality. You are able to take initiatives.
  • You are strongly motivated to work in the health and care sector.
  • Experience in developing (health) data infrastructures is an asset.
  • Experience in federated learning is an asset.
  • Experience in working with real-world health data and developing (bio)medical applications is an asset.
  • You are motivated to be part of an interdisciplinary team (neurologists, biomedical researchers, AI researchers, …).
  • You have excellent communication skills. You are fluent in English, both writing and speaking.
