The Division of Virology and Chemotherapy (Rega Institute), Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation consists of multiple research groups with expertise in virology and other aspects of biomedical research. In 2017, the laboratory set up a Translational Platform with the mission to expedite translational research of the different research groups. The Division of Virology and Chemotherapy is looking for a research manager for this Translational Platform to identify and support innovative science, coordinate new and current translational research projects and assist in building the data packages required to support transition to industry. He/she will also be responsible for the daily operational management of the Translational Platform in which he/she will manage a group of 7-10 technicians and post-doctoral researchers. He/she will also have to manage infrastructure, service provision and personnel as well as financial workflows.


Functie
  • Identify, initiate, support and/or coordinate translational research projects of the Laboratory of Virology and Chemotherapy.
  • Develop strategic plans to expedite translational research projects of the Laboratory of Virology and Chemotherapy. Translate these strategic plans into concrete research activities.
  • Introduce and/or develop highly standardized assays and SOPs and provide highest quality laboratory services, develop and validate custom-made assays and generate high throughput data sets to build extensive data packages to support transition of the research projects to industry standards.
  • Manage interactions and research activities between different research groups of the Laboratory of Virology and Chemotherapy and the Translational Platform.
  • Help to initiate, acquire and/or manage (inter)national collaborations, industrial partners and/or CDMO’s.
  • Identify, train and supervise highly competent staff (technicians and post-doctoral researchers) to ensure highest quality research.
  • Assist in grant writing to ensure continuation of research activities. Assist in paper writing.
  • Provide service to internal/external parties. Manage interactions with Leuven Research and Development.

Profiel
  • PhD in molecular biology or equivalent research area, with a minimum of 8 years post-doc experience of which at least 3 years abroad.
  • Abroad knowledge and experience in the fields of virology, vaccinology and cancer. Ideally, experience in small-molecule drug discovery and familiar with CRISPR technology and NGS data analysis.
  • Able to critically identify and evaluate new project opportunities.
  • Demonstrable project and people management skills.
  • Demonstrable project writing skills, e.g. through (co-)promotorships and papers in high impact journals in virology, vaccinology and cancer field.
  •  Experience with lab management skills, including ability to write protocols/SOPs and organization of laboratory activities.
  • Experience with different stakeholders in industry and academia.
  • Experience in research valorization.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
