YOUR ROLE AND TASKS

As a research conservator at Ghent University, you will join the ERC-Consolidator Grant project ‘A New Connoisseurship: Smart ways to detect forgeries (ARTDETECT 2024-2028)', under the leadership of the principal investigator, Professor Anna Tummers. The project is focused on developing novel approaches to detect forgeries. The team will consist of seven members who will collaborate closely.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the in situ examinations of paintings in the context of the ARTDETECT project.

  • Your tasks will include:
  • Handling the paintings during the in situ examinations;
  • Scanning the paintings with x-ray fluorescence (MA) XRF, processing and storing the resulting data;
  • taking samples for further analyses;
  • Contributing to the analysis of the paintings and to team publications as co-author;
  • Attending expert meetings in the context of the project

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  •   You hold an MA or Ph.D. degree in paintings conservation or technical art history;
  •   You have demonstrable experience with handling paintings in a museum context, with taking samples and with x-ray fluorescence scanning
  •   You are flexible in your working hours (the case studies depend on the availability of the paintings and instruments);
  •   You are a team player with excellent communicative skills and a keen sense of discretion, able to effectively deal with sensitive information;
  •   You have an excellent command of written and spoken Dutch and English;
  •   Experience with reflectance imaging spectroscopy (RIS) is a plus, but not mandatory.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration (0.2) with a term of 2 years
  • Your contract will start on 1/06/2024 at the earliest;
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s Degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate). Click here for more information about our salary scales ;
