Offer Description

Companies today are subject to a growing number of regulations that force them to identify and mitigate the impact of their activities along their entire value chain. Recent European directives now make companies accountable for these impacts: respect for human rights, deforestation risks, greenhouse gas emissions, etc. The recent EUDR directive ("deforestation free" regulation) requires companies trading in cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya and wood, as well as products derived from these commodities, to conduct extensive diligence on the value chain to ensure the goods do not result from recent deforestation, forest degradation or breaches of local environmental and social laws.

A consortium funded by Logistics in Wallonia Innovation Cluster will develop a digital platform to facilitate the due diligence process imposed by the EUDR directive. To support this development, HEC Liège (Management School of the University of Liège) is looking for a project leader in Management Sciences (Master, Ph. D. candidate or Postdoc level) with specialization and interest in Supply Chain Management (project manager, business analyst, business process design, information flow management) or Sustainability Management (sustainable value chains, fair trade, nature protection) or Law (due diligence processes).

The project leader will contribute to the development of the digital platform, in collaboration with 3 other consortium partners.
- a consulting company expert in forest management and due diligence process for timber,
- a software development company,
- a university lab specialized in satellite data analysis.

Job description :

The HEC Liege project leader will be specifically in charge of the modelling of the due diligence process for two commodities - timber and cocoa - i.e. ensuring the mapping of producers along the chain, the full traceability of products and the identification and mitigation of sustainability risks.

In practical terms, this includes:
• devising a typical due diligence process based on existing guidelines and regulations.
• modelling the supply chains information flows between stakeholders (local producers, cooperatives, transportation partners, traders, importers, industrial partner).
• operationalizing risks management procedures consistent with the specific commodities contexts.
• cooperating with project partners in charge of other work packages.

The researcher will be co-supervised by three HEC Liège professors - Célia Paquay, Thierry Pironet and Virginie Xhauflair – and will be involved in research activities carried out at Quantom and the Center for Social Economy.

Activities will include literature review, research reports and papers writing, project presentations, etc., participation to the consortium meetings; attendance to conferences, fairs, symposiums related to the topic.
The project might involve international missions if required by the project (Central or West Africa).

Your profile :

• You have a master’s degree in management sciences (including management, law, economics) or in computer science, data science, applied sciences, industrial engineering, agro-engineering, or similar
• You are interested in applied research questions in supply chain management and among others process modelling, sustainability regulation, risks management, due diligence process.
• You are highly motivated by the mission, and you have, or not, a professional experience related to the above mentioned topics.
• You are a team player with the ability to work autonomously and in an inter-disciplinary team
• Languages: fluency in French (usual working language of the consortium) and working knowledge of English (B2 level).

Our offer :

• Full-time contract for a minimum period of 2 years starting as soon as the position is filled.
• Monthly net salary is around 2400€, but may vary according to your experience (master, professional experience, post-doc).
• A friendly, professional workspace in the new HEC-ULiège building (Rue Louvrex, 14 - 4000 Liège).

Application process :

Interested candidates should send their motivation letter, curriculum vitae, and a list of 2 external references to corresponding professor, Prof. Célia Paquay: [email protected]

Deadline to submit the application: 12 May 2024

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview to be held in Liège in May 2024.
