As a part of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Computer Science (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/computer-science ) is a leading unit in Finland in its area and responsible for the teaching and research in computer science at the University of Helsinki. The number of professors at the department has grown in recent years and there are now 32 professorships. The main research fields at the department are artificial intelligence, big data frameworks, bioinformatics, data analysis, data science, discrete and machine learning algorithms, distributed, intelligent, and interactive systems, networks, security, and software and database systems. The department has extensive international collaboration with companies and universities. Within teaching, the department’s professors and staff are in charge of the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Programmes in Computer Science, as well as the separate Master’s Programme in Data Science, in which other departments also participate. Most of the teaching in the master’s and doctoral programmes is given in English.

The Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki invites applications for a

PROFESSOR OR ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

aiming to strengthen research areas in computer science at the university.

Position description
We are looking for a new professor or assistant/associate professor to carry out research into the field of software engineering.

The person to be chosen must have a strong scientific track record in the field of software engineering evidenced by publications in top tier forums of the field. The University of Helsinki and the Department of Computer Science offer excellent potential collaborators in the relevant areas, such as data science and other disciplines of different faculties of the university.

The appointee is expected to conduct research on an internationally high level. We expect a strong network of international and interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration. In addition, strong record in empirical software engineering and particularly in close industrial collaboration is considered a significant advantage. The teaching area of the position is software engineering. The person chosen for the position is expected to teach and develop teaching particularly in the Master’s Programme in Computer Science and potentially also in the Bachelor Programme in Computer Science and the Bachelor’s Programme in Science. In addition, the appointee will participate in doctoral education at the Department of Computer Science, collaborate with other groups in the department, acquire research funding for their research group, and participate in the interaction between science and society at large.

Qualifications
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term assistant/ associate professorship (tenure track), depending on their qualifications and career stage. A full professor must hold a doctoral degree in computer science or other relevant field and have high-level academic qualifications and experience in heading scientific research. The professor must also be able to provide research-based teaching of high quality, supervise dissertations and theses as well as show evidence of international cooperation in the field.

An assistant/associate professor must hold a doctoral degree in computer science or other relevant field and have demonstrated ability for independent scientific work as well as skills to teach the in the above-mentioned programmes. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to have competence and motivation for scientific career proven by scientific publications and other academic activities.

When considering applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to:
• applicant’s expertise in the research field (software engineering)
• experience in research with industrial impact
• scientific publications and other research results of scientific value
• experience in successfully leading research projects
• success in obtaining external research funding
• experience in teaching and supervision of students, pedagogical training, as well as other teaching merits
• international research experience, other international experience and positions of trust
• vision for development of the applicant’s own research work and the research field in general

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must be fluent in English. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, they are expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered.

The annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor typically amounts to 60,000–74,000 euros and for full professor to 74,000–92,000 euros.
